A quick introduction to explain What is VIA is needed

Hi guys, I was visiting the page, and I didn't find any text explaining what is VIA.
The main 3 links are for download, check compatibility and see the docs, but in the docs it doesn't explain what this is !
Can someone add a quick explanation for the lost souls ?
Not everyone that comes here are experts.
I bought a Lily58 and the guy that built it for me said "go to VIA page", and came here but I don't understand if this is an alternative to QMK, or an interface for QMK, or what ?
Some help for the next person that comes to the website would be very warm and appreciated !

Had no idea what via was. Ended up finding https://keyboard.university/guides/using-via-configurator which clarified things a lot.

Without this section, the website is very user hostile.
