2.3 Levels of Partnership {#2-3-levels-of-partnership}

Partners can have varying levels of engagement and commitment, from simply networking and sharing ideas to long-term co-management of projects. Different levels of engagement may be appropriate for different partners, depending on your respective goals and resources. Just because the partnership is less intense does not mean it is less valuable to your teens.

Networking and Sharing Ideas
Sharing ideas and knowledge with someone who has a different perspective on the community is valuable on its own.[^1] Informal meetings or conversations, or simply attending another organization’s events, can be the first steps in forming a partnership.
Cooperating and Coordinating
If you know what other organizations in your community are doing, you can coordinate your efforts to either build on each other’s work or avoid duplication. For instance, if the high school library has a vibrant reading group, you may not wish to set up a competing teen book club, but you might promote similar books in the library each month.
Informing Teens About Partners
Connect teens with services and resources from partners — via information on the library website or in library spaces.[^2] Partners can also be invited to set up a table in the teen area at scheduled times, giving the teens direct access to their services (for instance, providing legal or health information).
Collaborating on Teen Programming
Collaborating on teen programming with partners can create something more impactful than either partner working alone, as a short series or a one-time event.[^2],[^3]
Forming Community Coalitions
Libraries can form or join coalitions of organizations to support each other’s efforts and to have conversations about how they can all work together better to serve youth. [^2],[^3]

Embedded Partners
This term describes “fully invested” partners with whom the library has forged deep, long-term relationships that are embedded into the library’s regular services to teens. [^3]
Collective Impact
When disparate organizations unite to work on a particular community issue together, they are moving toward collective impact. The collective impact approach is characterized by a common goal, shared measurement of progress, mutually reinforcing activities, continuous communication, and a formalized support infrastructure.[^4] The Strive Partnership in the Cincinnati area is an example of a successful collective impact program that brought together government officials, colleges and universities, private foundations, and many others to improve the educational system.[^5]

Different characteristics of the partnership may also vary from less to more intense along a spectrum.[^1] For instance, the structure of your relationship may be informal and undefined, or highly structured with well-defined roles. Communication can be once-in-a-while or frequent, decision-making can be one-sided or completely equal, and each partner’s commitment can be high or low. Of course, any given partnership effort can fall somewhere in the middle of those extremes as well. There is no single “correct” configuration—the right combination will depend on you, your partner, your resources, and your goals.

  • How many projects have you worked on with the partner? Did they go well? Do you have a good working relationship with everyone who was involved?
  • Have any of these projects involved a monetary commitment? Did it cause any issues?
  • How many people in your library and at the partnering institution are interested in being involved? Just the two of you, or are more people engaged and excited about the partnership?
  • Has management from both sides supported past projects? Do they support another collaboration?
  • Do you both know how much time you have to invest in the new project?
