Using an XKB keyboard layout with kana keys, anthywl already works, but everything is katakana.
The plan is: allow switching conversion mode between hiragana/katakana/halfwidth-katakana/halfwidth-latin/fullwidth-latin in romaji mode, and then just go through the same process for keys input directly in kana.

I got around to checking how ibus-anthy does this. Once you select the typing method as kana it maps the keys based on a table to kana. There's a section in the ibus-anthy preferences where you can select the Kana key table.
