Image crop not working 1.3.1

Neither via typoscript, in the element-plugin settings itself or by hardcoding it in the template files.

I can confirm that this behaviour is still present in 1.5.7 and also 1.5.4. No matter what I set in conditions or or via flexform, all image sizes will be ignored. How can I change this?

still not working in 1.5.14 by default. or did i overlooked a setting?

could it be, that the description "Support of CropVariants possible." in version 1.5.5 means that the crop-variants are only supported in the backend (without the necessary fluid in the templates)?
