Another argument is that one of the very few keyboard layouts that was created by actual scientists (dvorak) focuses on hand alternation as well. Although that's not a particularly strong argument. But I'm sure a lot of typists disagree with your assessment and find hand alternation to cause less strain, which is even intuitively easy to understand.
