PDOS Programmers Progress Reference, and Help for New Comers

What is PDOS?
-------------
PDOS is a Public Domain and Open Source clone of MS-DOS,
currently in development. The name PDOS is an acronym
for "Public Domain Operating System".
Who can help with PDOS?
-----------------------
Anyone that knows C programming at any level. This project is also
about learning new things so it's ok if you don't know everything.
But it would be an advantage to know some Assembly programming as
well, even a rough understanding of Assembly will help. And it will
also be an advantage understanding about DOS and how it works.
What needs to be done with PDOS?
--------------------------------
We need to be able to make PDOS fully compatible with every MS-DOS program.
For this, every standard DOS interrupt handler function and every standard
DOS call needs to be implemented.
This isn't as complicated and difficult as some people might think it is,
most of the functions are very simple, which any C programmer should be able
to write. Below explains the project's standard of writing code for PDOS,
and the way in which you should implement the DOS calls.
We also need to make PD-Windows compatible with every Win32 program.
This requires updating kernel32.c and other DLLs that may be required.
It would be good if PD-Windows was capable of running Hercules (mainframe
emulator) so that PDOS/3x0 can be run under PD-Windows. That could
provide focus. But before that we should get Win32 versions of the tools
like gcc/ld ported to PD-Windows so that PD-Windows can be used to
develop PD-Windows.
How to implement DOS calls in PDOS:
-----------------------------------
Remember to use a similar programming style (indentation and identifier
naming style) used in the rest of the project, and also use 4 spaces
instead of a tab, because some other people working on the project
might be using a text editor that doesn't support tabs properly.
Spaces are more portable because every text editor should support
spaces properly but the same cannot be said about tabs. Also,
please restrict line lengths to 80 displayable characters so
that the code can be ported to environments with that line
length restriction, like normal MVS usage.
Check "bos.h" (the header for the prototypes of BIOS functions)
and see if the DOS call you are going to implement already
uses a BIOS function implemented in "bos.c". If not, carry on
reading, you will understand what to do at the end.
Use the search function in your text editor to search this
document for # to see what functions are already implemented.
Look at "pos.c" and see if the DOS call you are about to implement
will be used in a similar way to any of the functions there.
If so use the similar function in "pos.c" as base code for the DOS
call you are going to write.
Then once you are finished writing it, make sure it is in the
correct part of "pos.c", that is to say, in the correct order,
according to function and subfunction number (which are in
hexadecimal). And also add a comment to describe it like
the other functions in "pos.c" with the function and
subfunction hexadecimal number in the comment.
And also add the function prototype to "pos.h", again in
the correct order, with a comment next to it saying
what function and subfunction it uses, like the
other prototypes in "pos.h".
That's how to implement the DOS call, but the actual implementation
in high level programming of the DOS call you do in "pdos.c", you
do not need to update "pdos.h", only "pdos.c".
When adding the high level implementation to "pdos.c", write
the function using the same declaration you did in "pos.h".
How does this work you ask? Well "pdos.obj" and "pos.obj"
aren't linked together so it's possible to do that.
After you have finished writing the high level implementation of
the DOS call for "pdos.c", use the search function in the text
editor you are using to search "pdos.c" for the function
"int21handler" and add your DOS Call there, the same way the
other functions were added, and again in the correct order.
That should be it, unless you needed to use a BIOS function
that wasn't in "bos.c". Then you should write the BIOS function
yourself, again in the correct order according to the hexadecimal
value of the function and subfunction. And using similar comments
like the other functions in "bos.h" to explain what the function
does and what function and subfunction of the BIOS it calls.
Then add the function prototype to "bos.h" of the BIOS function
call you implemented in "bos.c", and also similar comments
next to that function prototype like the other functions.
