Bug Description

In Slack and Discord, I can add a ❤️ to the last message by typing + but when I try to do this in Signal, it sends a new message instead. I mostly use this to quickly thumbs up or thumbs down past messages to show that I've read and understood with more brevity.

Steps to Reproduce

  1. send message "Leaving soon?" from Alice to Bob
  2. on Bob's Signal, type +:+1:

Actual Result:

Alice receives +:+1:

Expected Result:

Alice receives a 👍 reaction on her message

Though it's not identical to Slack and Discord, you can do this in Signal today.

You can use Tab and Shift-Tab to select the message, and then Ctrl-Shift-E (⌘-Shift-E on macOS) to open the reaction picker. For example, if your app's focused on the composition area, press Shift-Tab a few times to select the message you want to react to, and then press Ctrl-Shift-E.

If this solves your problem, would you mind closing this issue? If not, no problem.

Personally I like the idea of emulating Slack's keyboard shortcuts. 👏

In the interim, would it be possible for the existing keystrokes you describe here be documented in the shortcut documentation: https://support.signal.org/hc/en-us/articles/360036517511-Signal-Desktop-Keyboard-Shortcuts

Thank you!

Assigning to myself to keep the bot away.

+1 on this feature (or should I say +:+1: )

it is possible to do it with cmd-J then cmd-shift-J (or E) then some tabbing or clicking but the point is to be able to do it quickly and from the keyboard, as you can in other platforms.

as @dominicporter said, on desktop you might have a mouse so clicking might be faster but that defeats the purpose of having shortcuts in the first place. Please bring this behaviour to our fingertips.
