🐛 the machine entered grub rescue after the manipulations by the bare metal infra provider #876

The machine was added and removed from the cluster. Then before it was fully de-provisioned it was added to another cluster.

Not sure if it's only related to the QEMU machines. Will keep that as draft to remember about the issue I saw.

Update: I think it sometimes happens when:

  • either PXE boot fails for some reason (network timeout etc)
  • or the disk is not clean but not installed either (not sure how that happens) and it tries to boot from disk

something like that.

For the machine to enter GRUB rescue, you need to have GRUB, so GRUB should be on disk, and this sounds like a disk which is not wiped (?), or a broken Talos install.

If PXE fails, it should stay in the UEFI/BIOS mode, but there will be no GRUB.
