What we do

Our overarching goal is to improve the ability of E3SM to model oceans with higher fidelity than
currently possible.

<!--
Task 1: Understand and quantify the importance of processes that are unresolved or poorly resolved by
current ESMs in coastal and open-ocean regions (targets Objectives 1 and 3)
Task 2: Design and implement a coupling strategy that allows E3SM to use ROMS as a regional nested
model coupled to MPAS-O (targets Objectives 1 and 2)
Task 3: Identify in what regions and under what conditions additional resolution is necessary, and for
those regions determine which nesting/coupling strategy is required to achieve the desired fidelity
(targets Objectives 2 and 3)
Task 4: Implement a new version of ROMS (ROMS-X) that is performance portable, i.e., that can run
effectively on hardware from laptops to the cutting-edge architectures available at the Leadership-class
Computer Facilities and the National Energy Research Scientific Computer Center, and in particular,
able to exploit the different graphical processing units (GPUs) available on those machines (targets
Objective 1)
