After updating to Windows 10 1809 (October update), the taskbar icon doesn't match with the desktop number. Always shows the icon with number 1 no matter what desktop you go.

I am seeing the same. Additionally, my desktop name tooltips are only showing on the first time I launch the exe. After that, changing desktops no longer pops up the desktop name tooltips.

In addition to losing tooltips, I've also lost the different background images by desktop. All of this together means it's really hard to tell what desktop I'm on.
It's acting like it can't tell that the desktop changed so it can't do any of these actions that should occur on a desktop change.

I fixed the issue by replacing the virtual-desktop-accessor.dll in the /libraries directory of the latest release by the newest version of the .dll released by Ciantic and renaming it properly.

You can download the .dll file from Ciantic's GitHub profile Here

It works perfectly! Thank you so much.

Beautiful! You can't believe how much of a relief it is to know what desktop I'm on from a glance.
Thanks so much.

Sorry for not replying earlier. I haven't updated my Windows yet, that's why I haven't released a new version of this to fix it since I can't test it personally. When I do update, I'll release a new version.
