navbar_links into a dropdown?

Hello,
Is there a way to make the optional navbar_links into a drop down, similar to TOCs? I'd like to add some extra navigation to integrate my Sphinx docs with an existing site. Currently this feature just adds them in a horizontal line, and you run out of space quickly...

We're also facing this limitation when building the new pandas documentation:

We'd like to make the Documentation link a dropdown with few options: Getting started, User guide and API reference.

@ryan-roemer is there a way to do this, or would you be ok to have this added?
