Under Settings->Developer options there's a "stay awake" switch which says "screen will never sleep while charging."

This switch should be placed in the ON position so that he can respond and ask questions over WhatsApp, and a micro-usb cable should be attached to the phone.

actually that should be turned on for the phones in the field!
