How to you knit from Rmd to md -- image syntax

Kim, when you knit or build from Rmd to md, what command do you use?

I use

{
options(knitr.duplicate.label = "allow")
rmarkdown::render("ch_md.Rmd", rmarkdown::md_document(variant = "commonmark"))
}

But this annoyingly converts the images into

<img src="ch_md_files/figure-commonmark/don_by_career-1.png" width="80%" style="display: block; margin: auto;" />

sorts of things, rather than the ![](ch_md_files/figure-commonmark/don_by_career-1.png) that will render on the forum.

I just use github_document so in the header
output: github_document
always_allow_html: true

-or use render

which gives ok fig refs, e.g.
""!""["" Regression to estimate population growth rates (assumes observation error dominates)""]""(EAlifetable_files/figure-gfm/unnamed-chunk-1-1.png)

(I was getting all mad that the figs were not named for the chunks, but turns out I forgot to nane this one LOL)

But what command or button-push do you use to 'execute' the knitting?

just knit to github_document with the toggle, or rmarkdown::render("EAlifetable.Rmd", output_format = "github_document")
