This issue supersedes #236 our longest standing open issue.
Here is a list of works for which we are lacking english language titles.
Often this will be due to the fact that the original work is e.g. french, nevertheless not having en titles makes querying the data rather complex, and use unfriendly.
We should make an attempt at batch retrieving english titles for these works from wikidata, or to use a translation service to augment existing entries.
The Work.language field could then hold information about original language of the work in question. It's current description:
not necessarily the original language, but the first tag for sorting purposes
Now the tricky part is maintaining our ability to follow translation flows. A work introduced in China might be translation of a Japanese translation of e.g. Moby Dick.
This requires some more thought, but I'm beginning to think that for works, we might want to refactor the respective tables slightly to reduce the number of duplicate rows,
and to be able to more succinctly differentiate works which are translations, and our translations of work titles for display purposes. We also need to consider how changes to works are reflected across all three sub-tables (W, PS, SS, AW).
