It seems that after a kernel upgrade to 3.16.7-29-desktop from 3.16.7-24-desktop has broken Guest auto-fit after running vmware-tools-patches to re-apply vmware tools. As far as I can see all other typical Tools functionality is intact. Re-applying VMware Tools successfully ran without returning any noticeable and relevant module errors.
According to "vmware-tools-cmd -v" the vmware tools is the same before and after the kernel upgrade.
Since I posted (I think) Tools 10.0.0.50046 (build-3000743) has been released, No Problems, autofit fixed
openSUSE Tumbleweed, the openSUSE rolling factory release (kernel 4.5.3-1-default"
LEAP 42.1, latest openSUSE stable release (kernel 4.1.20-11.default)
Still a problem but new info
openSUSE "stable" release 13.2(kernel 3.16.7.21-desktop), despite the patch update reporting that 10.0.0.50046 (build-3000743) has been successfully installed, VMware Tools reports that its version is still 9.4.6.33107 (build-1770165). As described in my previous post, all Tools features except "Autofit Guest" seems to work.
I haven't investigated whether this problem is specific to openSUSE or the kernel or any other distros.

If helpful, I've posted the entire patched-open-vm-tools.sh stdout
