Start NBD server #491
-
Im used to seeing start HDL server but the newest 1.1 release only offers the option to start an NBD server. I usually use HDL dump helper to connect but when im running the NBD server instead of HDL I can't connect. Is this function still for transferring games to the ps2 HDD or should I use a standalone elf for HDL? If it is a new better way to load games to HDD how do I use it? |

In fact, I am also not pretty sure if we can connect directly via hdl-dump to nbd server. Maybe @bignaux can help with it?

To be clear and simple, the nbd client (PC side) mount a fake hard drive so every hdl-dump is compatible with the nbd client. I developed it on linux, i tried the main clients, nbd-client and nbdfuse, both works, people claimed they successfully run it on windows, but they used same client with wsp (nbd-client). i still would like people try native client, https://cloudbase.it/ceph-for-windows/ , but no one wants to try, that seems to risk their life i imagine (you never know if it could explode your device). But btw, just retain that the beautiful piece here, hdl-dump doesn't need any change, since it provides you a complete transparent device on the OS. |

thanks for the detailed answer - I will add this information into the main opl readme (I think that people just are confused by this new feature). this also means that we still need some NBD clients between opl and hdl-dump.

Yes you need an nbd client, but you can use the hdd in ps2 like any other hard drive, so you can use all software, for example pfsshell (and now this one has fuse support, so you should be able to littery mount any PFS partition via network). Another useful thing, in the future, you could mount any PS2 block device on your PC using same stuff, like MC. |

Tbh that all goes way over my head but this other answer someone gave me implied that the latest nightly builds of hdl dumb use NBD instead of HDL
