We installed the DOI Plugin from Samvera Labs in 2023 - #2286. Unfortunately it has resulted in a fair amount of confusion and errors with DOI registrations, while not substantially reducing the need for data curators to manually fill in metadata from SA into DataCite. Problems include inconsistencies for unclear reasons in whether or not draft DOIs are created when datasets are submitted; DOI records getting stuck in draft / non-findable state; and unique metadata in DataCite being overridden when SA records are re-saved.
Per conversations with Clara, the plugin isn't really adding enough value to try to address the issues with it. We would rather just get rid of it. The main benefit from the plugin is that depositors know what their DOI will be immediately. We'd like to accomplish this in a simpler way instead -- I'll make a separate ticket.

I am not sure this particular issue is caused by the plugin, but came across a published dataset with several fields duplicated, I think all of which are part of the set that's used by the plugin. This particular item has been fixed but I wanted to document it.
