First custom style failed

I am trying to create a custom map style with black background and white road lines. I created the following basic style:

But when I import it and choose it I don't get any black color and I don't get the roads to show up either.

In day mode I get this:

And in night mode I get this:

The background color is intended to be black for either day or night mode and the roads don't show up. I looked at other map styles and tried to follow the logic. What am I doing wrong?

I am working with the existing styles rather than creating one from scratch and I am making good progress. No need to reply to this.
