Can't connect with python library

Hi,
I was using version 1.x.x and it was working fine, I upgraded to 2.2.0 and it started giving errors on connection. I tried which version worked last, and it was 2.1.1.
2.1.2, 2.2.0 are not working to connect for me.
the error is:
raise error.exc_type(error) from cause oracledb.exceptions.DatabaseError: DPY-4027: no configuration directory to search for tnsnames.ora

I checked that this file is present, the path to TNS_ADMIN is set and all should work fine.

I'm using python 3.9 and macbook pro with ARM processor.

Can you provide more details? Such as the contents of the script that demonstrates the issue? Also include this code:

file_name = os.path.join(config_dir, "tnsnames.ora")
for line in open(file_name):

That code demonstrates the problem. You need to do one of the following things:

• set os.environ['TNS_ADMIN'] before the import of the oracledb module OR
• set oracledb.defaults.config_dir to the the value you wish OR
• pass the value in the parameter config_dir to the connect() call

The import of the oracledb module reads the environment variable and stores the value in oracledb.defaults.config_dir. It is not examined again after that. You can also set the value of oracledb.defaults.config_dir yourself at any point, or pass the value in directly to the connect() call

Ok, after I moved it above import oracledb, the connection worked using tnsnames.ora.
Question would be why with version 2.1.1 and earlier, if I had specified the connection string explicitly as an argument in connect() function
I have connection string (con_s) as: user/password@//FQDN:port/instance connection = oracledb.connect(con_s,disable_oob=True)
, and it was not even present in tnsnames.ora it was connecting successfully, and now it is failing without information that is specified in tnsmanes.ora?

Can you provide more details about what you are saying fails? I tried this:

import oracledb

oracledb.defaults.config_dir = None
conn = oracledb.connect("python/dev@localhost:1521/DB23PDB1")
print("version:", conn.version)

And that works just fine for me!

Looking at your example I see this:

user/password@//FQDN:port/instance

That is incorrect. It should be this:

user/password@FQDN:port/service_name

There was a bug fix in version 2.1.2 that caused invalid Easy Connect strings to be looked up in the tnsnames.ora file. That might be the source of your issues!

python-oracledb 2.4.0's reworked connection string parser handles the optional leading "//" for Easy Connect strings so user/password@//FQDN:port/instance will now work.
