Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe.

At the moment we have no way to check whether changes are speeding up or slowing down code.

Describe the solution you'd like

Use pytest-benchmark to benchmark the speed of tests of interest.

Describe alternatives you've considered

Have a separate 'speed test' suite, but seems like overkill.
