In theory, if there were building outline data for jurisdictions that have adopted BLDS it would be pretty straightforward to create a highly portable app for reporting unpermitted construction.

Related to issue on showcase items.

We have "permits" that are associated with violations - maybe there's an intersection here if you're still interested in this?

I haven't been following BLDS that closely, but is there an intersection with 311?
Chicago has a 311 request code for reporting possible building violations, which sends an inspector out to the site and makes a determination.

@ejaxon This was an idea that was floated a while ago as a possible application of BLDS data across jurisdictions. Not sure if there is still interest here. I do think its still a pretty good idea.

@stevevance That's an interesting thought. I can imagine a linage between the two - maybe functionality that lets a user view existing permits (to see if construction activity is authorized at a location) before reporting a possible violation via 311 app.

This is interesting. I'm focused right now on pushing information out (reporting, dashboards, open data portal, etc.), but might well be interested in tying things together like that when we start looking more at the incoming information side in 2017.

Unpermitted construction = never issued a bldg permit.
Proving that would mean digging through microfilm/archives, unless you're confident everything has been uploaded/digitized. In Honolulu, sometimes the structure was built before permits were issued. So property tax records/other databases are used as corroborating evidence.
