Game data authors (credits) and license clarification #148
Comments
Hello, hope all is well over there.
I am the man who started developing of this game and wrote most of it's
code (includes all the code written prior to version 0.2.0) and created all
initial placeholders for assets used in this game.
All sounds used in this game were found on freesound.org. I was choosing
them personally. Unfortunately at that time we weren't maintaining any
licensing documentation so there was not place where I could write down
authors. Actually CONTRIBUTORS and LICENSE files were created after work on
the game was finished.
Regarding music, indeed, it was all provided by a man having nickname
Титановые Яйца. He has not provided his real name but he gave us the
explicit permission to publish the music under CC-BY-SA 3.0 license.
Graphics was provided by different people. Most textures were created from
scratch. If I remember it correctly, kleinepanzer did most of texture work.
We took some free models (the spider, the zombie, the running man) and made
sprites out of them. I am pretty sure licenses of these models were CC0.
Regarding the model of Violet - a man, I don't remember his name, gave us
the explicit permission to use his model to create sprites and scenes with
her and use it under CC0 license.
If there is a necessity I can look through my digital archive for any
additional information regarding these resources and it's history, although
I would not like to do it since it can take significant amount of time.
The only things that are actually not free at all are fonts. I haven't
managed to find suitable free fonts and haven't contacted authors of used
fonts.
Feel free to contact me if I can be of further assistance.
Best regards,
Nikita Makarov

proprietary library?
Of course it is also possible that both use cc0/public domain sounds.
I remember hearing violetland's screams on freesound but can't find them
again (I might be imagining this).
violetland's sounds (for quick listening): https://clyp.it/pe5vcagw
cartoon: https://streamable.com/rp2il (Mighty Magiswords S2E36
"Ghosthaste")
This made me check the license and author information in the Violetland
project and I realized Violetland uses CC-BY-SA 3.0
https://github.com/ooxi/violetland/blob/master/LICENSE.ASSETS but is not
clear about who is the author of which asset.
There are some credits in
https://github.com/ooxi/violetland/blob/master/CONTRIBUTORS.md but for
example V.M. is the only one attributed with sound effects with the comment
"sound optimizations" but it's not clear who made (owns the copyright) on
the sounds.
I noticed the fonts (easy to google) might not be CC-BY-SA 3.0 or
compatible:
https://www.dafont.com/harabara-mais.font
Note of the author
Font Demo available only on the website Dafont. No other site is
authorized to distribute this font.
This source is not free for commercial use.
For full font and commercial use license, please contact the author.
More info send email to: ***@***.***

Free font Podobin can be contacted at: 8921-486-98-14

(dead URL)
Or kleinepanzer and bOHeLi are attributed to graphics but it's unclear who
made which graphics
Титановые Яйца might be the only clear attribution, assuming they made all
the music and are cool with CC-BY-SA 3.0
Or maybe the copyright holder is something like "The Violetland Team"
My worry about use of proprietary assets is that other open source
projects might re-use content and falsely spread non-free assets under free
licenses.
Is there any way to get more insight on the origin of assets that are part
of Violetland?

Thank you very much for bringing this up @GamesOpenSource! I have no concern regarding a cartoon using sounds without copylefting them, however we should strive to keep this repository free. Also thank you @guidebot for the confirmation that the sounds where taken from freesound. Is anybody aware of a reverse sound search (or something similar)? This way we might be able to dig up the correct license and place them in the repository
I don't think we are using harabara any more, do we? We are using Xolonium which is licensed quite liberally using SIL Open Font License. |
Thanks for the long replies! I found the scream sounds on freesound after searching a little more (it was motivating to know that they have to be there somewhere). I found them searching for pain scream woman on page 2
You can keep the attribution license or re-license to cc-by-sa if you prefer for some reason, see https://wiki.creativecommons.org/wiki/Wiki/cc_license_compatibility Remaining sounds (for comfy copypaste): music (copypaste again): You could keep a central file with file/license information like for example or use a per-file or per-folder license info file system like Personally I like the https://github.com/redeclipse/base/blob/master/doc/all-licenses.txt structure the best. It's also possible to keep the info outside of the repo using the wiki like at https://github.com/flareteam/flare-game/wiki/Credits (easier to collaborate on but harder to find/include in future releases? I prefer in-repo)
Instead, if you still have the same login information on freesound, you could check https://freesound.org/home/attribution/ and copy (easer to copy from "text view" see https://freesound.org/home/attribution/?format=plaintext ) which sounds might be relevant. I could take a listen and find out which ones ended up being used. If that's not possible, let me know, I'll try to just use the search function :) (there is no reverse lookup I think but I could ask on the forums for help in the worst case) |
Here is the list of sounds I downloaded at the time of violetland development: Downloaded on April 9th, 2011 |
