For years I used breezebrowser on windows. It has imho one of the best batch rename capabilities. Sadly it only runs on windows (and doesn't work very well under wine). It would be nice if a similar batch rename capability could be added to phototonic. It can rename to multiple output formats, including custom fields, and it can use as a sort order filename, file system times, image times and the strongest feature of all, the order that they are in the thumbnail view - which can be completely random based upon the user dragging and dropping. In archiving images, I will frequently get images from multiple sources. being able to drag and drop the thumbnails to re-order them, then rename them based upon that order is a huge time saver.

Not sure if this is something that should be bundled in an image viewer?
I'd recommend krename, it's much more powerful than breezebrowser from what I can see from screenshots (krename supports not only images, but PDFs, multimedia files, television series schemes, odf files, etc.).
