Question on the .so domain

@octokatherine Dumb question (I know too little about this), but why was the .so (Somalia) domain chosen? A quick Google search shows that various companies seem to be blocking .so domains (search term: companies blocking ".so" domains) of which notion.so seemed to be affected a bit (at least that's what I read) . Any reason not to use a more commonly used github.io page?
