The NVDA+backspace key combination to move to focus in browse mode doesn't do what I would expect.

STR:

  1. Browse a website.
  2. Move the review cursor around. This works.
  3. Press NVDA+backspace and try again. I can no longer move the review cursor with the previous/next line keys, because it gets stuck on a link.

When I'm browsing the web (and in document review and browse mode), I think of focus as the line of text that I'm reading. Once I press this key, I should be able to use the review cursor to navigate just like I can the regular arrow keys, and like I could before I did this.

I don't seem to be able to reproduce this with NVDA Version: next-13775,f8768d83 in either Chrome Version 55.0.2883.87 m (64-bit)
or Firefox Version 50.1.0. Although I am not 100% sure what is expected. The user guide specifies "NVDA+backspace Moves to the object that currently has the system focus, and also places the review cursor at the position of the System caret, if it is showing"

Using this Github issue as an example page, I get the following behaviour:

  • toggle NVDA+space to ensure that I am in browse mode
  • Use the down arrow until I hear "When I'm browsing the web..."
  • Trigger Move to focus with NVDA+backspace (laptop mode shortcut)
  • NVDA reports "@feerrenrut link visited"
  • Press the down arrow, and NVDA reports "text that I'm reading. Once I press..."

@tspivey Could you modify my example to explain what you expect to happen?

I can reproduce this in Firefox 66.0.2 and Chrome 73 with NVDA 2019.1.
Tested as follows:

Keyboard layout set to Laptop

  1. Open one of the browsers
  2. Go to google.com
  3. In browse mode, navigate with arrow keys to "google apps"
  4. Press nvda+up and down arrow and see what happens
  5. Press nvda+backspace
  6. Press nvda+up and down arrow and see what happens

Actual: NVDA's review mode is document review. When pressing nvda+up and down arrow in step 4 you can navigate the text around google apps. But in step 6, NVDA only says "top, bottom" although the review mode is still document review and not object review.

Expected: the navigation in document review should also work after pressing nvda+backspace.

This is not reproducible anymore with NvDA 2024.4 Beta, Firefox 130 or Chromium Canbary 131. Closing as works for me. If you are still having this issue, please comment and we can reopen.
