2023-09-01 update: removed technical notes on virtual desktops due to implementation changes in Insider Preview builds.
This discussion will serve as a meta issue on Windows 11 Version 23H2 features and changes and brainstorming how NVDA can support them. Please file separate issues for each feature/change so NV Access, contributors, Microsoft staff, and others can comment on individual changes/features/issues.
Introduction
Windows 11 Version 23H2 is an upcoming feature update for Windows 11 operating system. While the build number is not set in stone yet, it will be an enablement package (EKB: enablement knowledge base) on top of Version 22H2 (build 22621). Therefore, bug fixes and security updates will be shared across 22H2 and 23H2, and most things from Windows 11 SDK build 22621 changes will work.
Note: there is an Azure and container counterpart: build 25398 but it is mostly meant to host cloud-based services and containerized workloads, not an exact desktop experience needed by NVDA.
Changes
Cortana replaced by Windows Copilot, an interface for Bing Chat (see technical notes section).
Virtual desktops: desktop label and animations when changing virtual desktops with provisions to switch between local and remote (Windows 365) PC's (see tecnical notes section).
New volume mixer: open volume mixer by pressing Control+Windows+V.
RGB lighting and device/patterns management (see possibilities section).
Please add additional changes unique to 23H2 if appropriate.
Technical notes
Coppilot: uses Web View 2 (Chromium Edge) to render the interface, meaning browse mode can be used to review responses.
Possibilities
RGB lighting and device management: RGB lighting could be a useful tool for screen reader developers and testers wishing to use lights as means of learning about screen reader internals, more specifically noticing error conditions visually.
