author option

I am trying to repo.init a new repository, add a readme then make an initial commit. Unless I include the author option in the repo.commit, the commit function isn't getting called. When I do include the author option, the function gets called, but I don't know what I should enter for author. How can I set the author of the repo before making the initial commit?
