Too much advertising on NHibernate site #67
Comments
Not really, like $20 USD a month.
I use it to pay for the server that runs teamcity agent. It cost me around $100 NZD ($60 USD) a month.
I would agree with this. I’ll take a look how to make it less annoying. It was running on “automatic optimization” option for a while. |
Just for reference how it looks at the moment. Front page. 1 ad. It's not too overbearing. Documentation page (and others), a few seconds after it loaded: Closing the overlay, we get: Well, obviously the ideal scenario would be to not have any third-party ads at all, but having said that, a single ad like on the front-page isn't terrible. But on the Documentation page the ads completely dominate the actual content and makes it look almost like one of those third-rate "news" sites whose sole purpose is to deliver ads. :) (Actually, after I had clicked around a bit and got back to the frontpage, it too had 4 ads.) I don't know much about using ads - like, how the income relates to the number of ads on each page. E.g. if 3 of 4 ads ( bottom and two side panels) are removed, plus also remove the popup, would that automatically make the income drop something like 80%?
That seems reasonable. Just for the record, I don't have any issues with that. :) |
I've disabled the auto-ads - the settings are not really customizable: minimum "ad load" that can be selected is 6. Now ads (I suppose) should only be in places where they were explicitly added, and not spread like a virus. I would really want to find an alternative to funding the TC build agent (sharing the cost is not really an option among us I think) and switch off the ads completely. |
Currently when I open the nhibernate.info Documentation page I see fully four ads. Three in vertical side bars plus a fourth one as an overlay footer.
Plus, when I opened the page there was a fifth one that opened full-screen covering all the content so I must interact with it to remove it.
I think this is too much advertising and it's annoying and looks unprofessional.
Is this actually generating any useful level of income? (and if so, where does it go?)
