<head>Commentarius rerum
actarum Constantinopoli per Tranquillum Sacratissimae Regiae Maiestatis Romanorum <abbr>etc.</abbr>
legatum. Anno 1542.</head>
damno commovebar, quum sciebam, Vestram <abbr>Sac. M.</abbr> velle tempus extrahere. Per <placeName>Thurciam</placeName>
euntem me libenter videbant Thurci ac letabantur, quia existimabant me ad pacem
conficiendam proficisci.
Nuntii
quotidie afferebant, omnes christianos conspirasse in Thurcos, multos reges simul venire
Iamque dimissus a Thurco parabat discessum, quum subito allatum fuit, nostrum exercitum
obsidionem solvisse. Gaudium ingens sequutum est, ipse nuntius publice donatus est. Non
tam <placeName>Budae</placeName> timebatur quam ne noster exercitus, expugnato <placeName>Pesto</placeName>, <pRef>Sirimium</pRef> ac <pRef>Belgradum</pRef>
opprimeret.</p>
<p>Offendebantur etiam plurimum a me visos in itinere spahias eorum, <sic>egre</sic> domibus expulsos
consistit.</p>
<p>
sibi mortem, mihi vero periculum contrahat.</p>
<p>2. <note resp="alter">[Colloquium cum <persName>Solymanno Bassa</persName>]</note> Et eodem die quo veni <placeName>Constantinopolim</placeName> post
audientiam publicam vocatus sum ad <persName>Solimanum Bassam</persName>. Is est eunuchus, primus consiliarius.
M.tis</abbr> primum omnium conatus sum, eum
reddere benevolum <abbr>V.re S.M.ti.</abbr> Dicebam, serenissimum dominum meum audivisse singularem
principem. His de causis serenissimum regem meum voluisse commendare illi sua negotia,
optatum finem sortiretur.</p>
<p>
<note resp="alter">[<sic>Que</sic>
dummodo esset absque damno sui domini et sine detrimento sui honoris. Ad nomen
<pb n="23"/>
Regiae <abbr>M.tis</abbr>, quatenus commode fieri possit.</p>
viribus humanis, nisi Deus aspiraverit. Itaque constat, multo meliorem esse certam pacem
quam speratam victoriam. Nunc in manu vestra est dari pacem, victoria de manu Dei
expectanda est. An creditis, Deum leto vultu aspicere vastari terras, deserta ex cultis
fieri, innocentes homines rapi, opprimi, distrahi? Deus iste quidem permittit fieri
Vos
dicitis, magnum esse crimen hominem depingere, cui animam inspirare nequeas, quasi homo
videretur per superbiam <sic>emulari</sic> divinam potestatem. Quanto sceleratius est eripere animam
homini atque ipsum Dei opus dissolvere?</p>
<p>Quum in hanc sententiam multa dixissem, [verba <persName>Solymanni</persName>] ille inquit, se quoque velle
dominus petit a domino meo, tandem edissere.</p>
<p>Existimo, inquam, constare <abbr>V.re M.</abbr> dominationi quo iure <placeName>
<sic>Hungarie</sic> Regnum</placeName> pertineat ad
<abbr>Sacr.
conditionibus quibus Joanni dederat.
<sic>prestabit</sic>. Adornavi hanc petitionem
pluribus verbis, ut <sic>prescriptum</sic> fuit in <sic>Instructionem</sic>. <note resp="alter">[Responsum <persName>Solymanny</persName>]</note> Respondit
Bassa: <sic>quommodo</sic> potest Imperator <placeName>Budam</placeName> dare, in qua munienda et conservanda infinitos
sumptus fecit? Sunt et nostra templa <placeName>
<sic>Bude</sic>
est. Quo facto statuentur ex utraque parte fines, et sic in perpetuum pace fruemini;
alioquin Imperator ad pacem non consentiet. Tamen, dixit, se de his relaturum ad
Imperatorem. Adhuc enixe commendavi negocium <abbr>V.re M.tis</abbr> et rogavi, pararet mihi aditum ad
Imperatorem, licet ille mandasset, ut ipsi basse negocium proponerem.</p>
<p>3. <note resp="alter">[Colloquium cum <persName>Rusthan Bassa</persName>]</note> Dehinc ivi ad <persName>Rhustan Bassam</persName>. Habitis cum eo omnibus
iis ceremoniis, <sic>que</sic> intercesserant cum altero bassa, quum petitionem <abbr>V.re M.tis</abbr> aperirem,
negocium declararem. Sepe interpellabat me homo vanissimus, nescio equidem arrogantior an
impudentior sit an contumeliosior.
<pb n="24"/>
<persName>fratrem Georgium</persName> adduceret <sic>in</sic> odium <abbr>V.M.tis</abbr>.</p>
<p>
debet? Dixi, me nescivisse quicquam de his. <sic>Quommodo</sic>, inquit, nescivisti?</p>
<p>
<note resp="alter">[Que respondit Tranquillus]</note> Unde, inquam, scirem, si Regia <abbr>M.tas</abbr> mihi non dixit?
defendant.
<p>Post multa verba promisi ei nomine <abbr>V.M.tis</abbr> ea <sic>que</sic> mihi mandaverat, si negocium <abbr>V.re M.</abbr>
proficeret, rogavique plurimum, ut rebus <abbr>V.M.tis</abbr> faveret, re ipsa esset <sic>expecturus</sic> optimo
et liberalissimo principi se fuisse gratificatum.</p>
<p>Deinde reliquos duos bassas, <persName>Mechmet</persName> et <persName>Usrei</persName>, adii eisque peticionem <abbr>V.M.tis</abbr> ostendi,
illum modestum, hunc rusticum <sic>reperii</sic>.
<sic>preesse</sic> volunt.</p>
<p>4. Tertio die postquam eo veneram, per fraudem ademerunt mihi unum servitorem, quem
peritum itineris et lingue Thurcicae magna pecunia propter meas commoditates in <placeName>Bihath</placeName>
conduxeram.
inquit, statim ipse redibit.
fraude nobiscum agi, violari fidem Imperatoris. Venit ad me barizelus, interrogavit, quid
Sed

est. Postea rescivi ab uno custodum, quem pecunia <sic>corrumperam</sic>, iussu bassarum servitorem fuisse captum et in secreto loco ab ipsis bassis interrogatum: cur venissem, quid haberem negocii, essem ne legatus, an explorator, et multa eiusmodi alia.
</p>
<p>Tunc primum invasit me timor, considerantem quam perfidiam eorum, et quod in servitore cepissent <sic>sevire</sic>, ne a meo quidem sanguine esse temperaturos. Ac re vera dicebatur, Imperator vehementer excanduisse et etiam decrevisse me interfici, sed consilio bassarum inhibitus est, ne id faceret contra fidem publicam a se datam, sine ullo more, sine exemplo, ne violaret ius gentium; neminem posthac principem christianorum ausurum legatos ad eum mittere, nec ipsum ad christianos. Iam in <placeName>Galata</placeName> sparsa fuerat fama, ademptum esse mihi caput.</p>
<p>5. Igitur mortuo <persName>

Existente, inquam, <placeName>Buda</placeName> in manibus Christianorum nemo se commovit. Nunc vos ubi eam preter spem omnium occupastis, muniatisque quotidie mirum in modum, magnaque presidia in ea teneatis, unde Thurci terras serenissimi domini mei crebris excursionibus vastant incenduntque, ac sub meum discessum de Vienna civitatem Jaurinum depredati sunt ac <sic>inflamaverunt</sic>, non putant se tutos in domibus suis, si Thurci <placeName>Budam</placeName> tenuerint. <abbr>V.re M.ti</abbr> redderent.</p>

<p>7. <note resp="alter">[Tertium colloquium cum <persName>Solimanno Bassa</persName>]</note> His peractis fui multos dies in hospitio
expectans responsum. Postea petii colloquium <persName>Solimani Basse</persName>. Consensit, vocatus sum.
mititte me per postam, alioquin nihil boni sequetur.
Ego inquam: Igitur vestra porta
patet intrantibus, clausa est exire volentibus. Summa celeritate me serenissimus dominus
His dictis porrexi Basse
salvum conductum Imperatoris. Bis eum legit, diuque in eo meditatus est, quum nullum
scrupulum invenisset, quo mihi negocium exhiberet. Inquit: Ubi sunt altere littere, <sic>que</sic>
fuerunt his annexe? Alias, inquam, non vidi.</p>
<p>Quesivit ab interprete, an etiam alie fuissent litere. Negavit interpres. Tandem, quum
<sic>dimittat</sic>
<persName>Jonus Beg</persName> mirabatur, in quem eventum tamdiu <corr>detinerer</corr>. </p>
<p>Hinc recta profectus sum ad <persName>Rhustam Bassam</persName>. Recensui illi verba <persName>Solimani Basse</persName> de
responso Imperatoris.
Tum erat dubius Thurcus, an confestim Adrianopolim
contenderet, melius rebus suis ex propinquiore loco consulturus, propter famam adventantis
ingentis exercitus.</p>
Quod ego arripiens, in me, inquam, promissa
<pb n="28"/>
respondetur, omnem insummi pecuniam in tuenda <placeName>Buda</placeName>.</p>
<p>Expeditis omnibus <sic>que</sic> videbantur ad me pertinere, ocium decrevi agere, nam et interpres
dixit, nequicquam expectes dimitti antequam succedat aliquod in Hungaria vel secundi vel
adversi.</p>
<p>Interim exercitus successit Pestho. Magnus metus ortus est Constantinopoli. Imperator
Chaussi, mei custodes
reprehendebant <abbr>V.M.tem</abbr>, quod misisset petitum pacem et nihilominus oppugnaret Pestum.
Dicebam, bene agere <abbr>M.tem Reg.</abbr>, postquam de pace nihil renuntiatur, nolle occasioni
deesse, satis diu expectavit responsum. Hoc egit Imperator me detinendo. Tunc illi: Si
saltem hoc nuntiaret rex tuus Imperatori, tuus sum, omnia impetraret. Omnia, inquam, dicta
sunt bassis <sic>que</sic> debuerant dici. Propterea sic illis respondebam, quia sciebam, eos omnia
mea verba deferre ad bassas. </p>
<p>Post vigesimum circiter diem vocavit me Rhustan Bassa dixitque: Propterea vocavi te, ut
tibi darem malum noscere; venit a <corr>beglerbeg</corr> chiechaia nuntians, Alemanos
discessisse a Peste, timuisse, quod audissent, jantizaros venire subsidio nostris, sed
nondum locutus sum cum eo. Recta ivit ad Imperatorem ad Bechusi. Est autem hortus
Imperatoris eo nomine in littore in Asia prope Constantinopolim, ubi redierit. Omnia
expiscari.
viribus Thurcorum opponi potuisset, vix tentata oppugnatione, nulla existente causa metus
recessisse an fugisse; dixerim: haud scio.
<note resp="alter">[De Petro Pereny]</note> Tunc etiam dixit: Quis suasit regi tuo,
Petrum Pereni preficere Hungaris?
<p>
<note resp="alter">[Verba Rustan Bassa]</note> Dixit etiam: Nonne melius est regi tuo dare illas quatuor civitates
eum redii, nisi postquam fui dimissus.</p>
<pb n="29"/>
<p>9. <note resp="alter">[Quartum colloquium cum Solymanno Bassa]</note> Postremo exactis duobus mensibus Solimanus
Dixi, me penitus nescire. Non credebat, donec iureiurando affirmavi, quod nescirem. Dixit:
Ego me interponam apud Imperatorem sicuti feci pro Venetis. Nolebat videre nec
audire legatos Venetos Imperator. Effeci tamen, ut ad ipsum Imperatorem venirent. Postea
<p>Dixit: Rex tuus mittat exploratum Samandriam, inveniet 300 maiores bombardas ibi fundi,
tribus in locis pontes struemus: unum in Ezek, alterum ad Varadinum Petri, tertium
Varasdini. Ibraim Bassa Vienne oppugnationem digito attigit, ego utraque manu apprehendam.
<p>Nullus, inquam, antehac legatus sic male tractatus fuit sine mea culpa. Tua, inquit,
<pb n="30"/>
<p>10. Discessi Constantinopoli <date>biduo ante festum Martini</date>. Adrianopolim <date>6. die</date> veni. Ibi
Agapetus Fulcro me convenit, dixitque, legatum Polonum, quem ego sciebam, expeditum et
donatum esse, fuisse Constantinopoli detentum propter quasdam controversias in confinibus
Polonie cum Thurcis secutas. <date>Ante Nicolai quatriduo</date> in Novo Pazar inveni tabellarium
ipsius regis nuntius precesserat uno die, quatuor magnis itineribus eum sequebantur,
Cesaream <abbr>M.tem</abbr> divertendumque malum a Gallia, vereor, ne Apuliam classe invadant, quod
M.ti</abbr> declaravi Prage. Vehementer timebam, ne in Bosna me tollerent, in qua multi nuntii
perierunt. Sed preter spem Dei benignitate servatus sum. Ulama Beg sanzacum reperi in
Thesna, tunc commode <placeName>Buda</placeName> redierat.
Regem, <abbr>M.tas</abbr> Regia, inquit, nuntiet mihi suam voluntatem; ego efficiam, ne Imperator huc
<sic>falleret</sic>, imparatamque aggrederentur.
