using e.g., kill/sigkill instead of stop to cancel processes

The forthcoming 0.8.4 release provides a halfway solution to this, brutally killing the owning process. Mapping that to determinedly killing the actual resource is a bit more involved, as per issues #75 and #83.

Partially resolve in v0.8.4. Migrating to 0.9.0.
