Current goal

Betanet release of EVM support

Status

Merged most of the changes in the EVM branch. Still some CI bugs to be fixed (around nightly protocol & RPC tests). To merge to master, need to have a temporary fix for meta-transactions; plus prevent the creation of additional EVM accounts and make sure that there's one now, and a round of tests with a merged master checkout with EVM feature disabled, and check that we do not break Testnet.

• Checked the genesis update in case EVM feature is turned on. The PR is merged.
• Added EVM cost estimator depending on the input lengths
• EIP-712 not included in the EVM runner, still to be fixed

• OpenEthereum revealed 3.1.0 <- interesting finding
  • 3.1.0 forked 2.5.x which is behind our current version 2.6.8
  • Do we need to jump on 3.1.0, which is too raw at the moment?
  • Decision: use the last Parity version, 2.7.2.
• Finished and merged the upgrade to 2.7.2 ([EVM] Update the EVM to the most recent version #3506, Upgrade to OpenEthereum 2.7.2 #3595)
• Arto to visit all the calls for Ethereum core devs
  • Today: Ethereum Core Devs Meeting #100
  • January: this is when the Berlin hard fork is scheduled for at the moment
• Switched to working on validation: fixing CryptoZombies tests ([EVM] Fix the CryptoZombies test #3611)
• Need more tasks after CryptoZombies
  • Eugene: create tests for precompiles, especially new ones that were added in Istanbul

• Some tests are not yet fixed:
  • non-nightly test is broken (chunk forwarding feature test failing)
• Wrap param estimator as a feature <- may not be the necessary thing for the Betanet release, but still makes things cleaner

Discussion

• Do we need automatic eip-712 encoding based on evm function input on protocol side?
  • Needed for tests (in tests a manual encoding is okay). Should we drop automatic encoding? (only blocker step is rlp decoding of evm function input, should be an easy task, but maybe not necessary)
• Need to earn how to use restream
  • Scheduled link for marketing?
