git-gui won't find git directory. Other git commands work fine.

$ which git
/usr/bin/git

jw@kiste UCRT64 /d/wc/git/test/src
$ which gitk
/usr/bin/gitk

The directory named in the error message is the correct directory containing all the git administrative data for the project. But for some reason, git-gui won't recognize it as such.

Any ideas?

I have the same issue and it started a while back, not sure when.

workaround: If you run git gui& from the directory that contains the .git directory then it works.
