Adding replies from the website after I as a paying customer raised it as an issue:
I'm happy to help clarify our decision. We have a list of email domains commonly used by attackers that we don't allow to be used to set up a new account — it looks like the relay email address you were hoping to use may be through one of those domains.
While I don't have any question at all that you're just trying to set up a YNAB account/spending plan, this is one of our unbendable security rules that we maintain to protect all YNABers.
If you have another email address you could use (or even create a new one through a service like Gmail just for this purpose), you'll be able to use that with no trouble at all. I also wanted to mention that we do not sell users' data (and we never have), it's one of the core tenets of our Privacy Policy.
I am sorry for the extra hassle here, we just want to do the best we possibly can to protect all of our users (you included). For more on that you can also check out our Security policy.
We use a list of these domains (used by many other companies, globally) which creates hard lockout—meaning there is no mechanism that would allow us to make exceptions here.
We would love for you to continue with YNAB, but it will have to be with your current email (or any with an accepted domain, if you opt to use something other than your personal email).
YNAB (ynab.com) blocks e-mail addresses used with Firefox Relay.
