HitHighlightedSummary results for pages are wrong when using Search Box

When I connect the Search Box to my Search Results WP, the summary results for pages changes to code. I can't seem to pin down what I am doing wrong. Anyone have any ideas?

Same page being referenced in both scenarios below.

Scenario 1 - Query template only

• Search Results WP
• Layout = List
• Query template = {searchTerms} ContentType:Custom Page AND RefinableString00:Topic

HitHighlightedSummary results for pages are correct - "MIS Company Resources"

Scenario 2 - Using Search Box only

• Search Results WP
• Layout = List
• Use input query text = PnP - Search Box, Properties = Search query
• No customized settings on Search box
• Search "MIS"

HitHighlightedSummary results for pages are what looks like ID code - "...MIS) string;# 1 2345 ,57 GP0|#d123abc4-5678-9a12-..."

This happens every time I connect a search box. I also noticed more tags appear when I connect a Seach box.

Can you verify that you get the same result by an even more simple config:
Query Template: ContentType:"Site Page" *
Layout: List or Detailed List

in that case it is just what the API returns.
You can inspect the results from the API using the browser dev tool, like this:

Both List Layout and Detailed List Layout have *same summary results when using that Query Template. In this set up the code is appearing in summary with and without the Search Box connected. It appears the summary includes code when there isn't enough reference-able text on the page.

I hopped on a site with Microsoft Search and it looks like the issue is their set up. Their result for the same page has the ID code

PnP Search Query template ContentType:"Custom Page" (asterisk) - I search the term and the summary is text but its a mass of multiple properties

PnP Search Query template ContentType:"Custom Page" {searchTerms} - I search the term and the I get the ID code. (Same result from Microsoft Search)

It appears the search boxes search so many properties that it is collecting every property connected to HitHighlightedSummary that is on a page/document. And the result is either the first connection or all of the ?friendly? connections.

My thought is to assign the property I want to a RefinableString and then add an If statement in the results layout so pages show my property instead of HitHighlighedSummary, but I can't figure out which property it is, as HitHighlightedSummary doesn't show any mapped properties.

Btw your query template is wrong. {searchTerms} ContentType:Custom Page AND RefinableString00:Topic should be {searchTerms} ContentType:"Custom Page" AND RefinableString00:Topic. Add " around multi term values you want targeted to a property.

Ah okay. I always got the same results with and without the quotations, so I wasn't sure. Probably because the first word thus far has been unique. Thank you!

For scenarion 2, how is your web part setup? What is the query template you are using?

Scenario 2 was just the default query template - {searchTerms}
