Section 3: The Scoreboard JSONs

The "miniscoreboard"

As we saw in Section 2, there are a number of Scoreboard files available in different formats. For this How-To, I'm going to focus on the minscoreboard.json/xml. However, the attributes for "game" is very similar for the other scoreboard formats.

The minscoreboard starts out with a few levels before you can get to game info. It trees down in the following way:

"data": -> "games": -> "game":.

Once you get to the "game" attribute, you can then access data for each individual game.

I'm linking mostly to .xml files due to the formatting being easier to read in the browser. However, the example later in this guide will utilized a call to the .json file. The .json in the browser window will show up as a mess of text, so try this formatter to get the .json string into a more legible format.

Below, I have posted a snippet of the miniscoreboard.json for March 15th, 2014. This is just one game of the 10 games played that day. As you can see, the .json string is incredibly long for each game and contains a ton of information.

When we start looking at it we can see
"home_team_name": "Reds",
indicates that the Cincinnati Reds were the Home Team for this game and
"away_team_name": "Padres",
indicates that the San Diego Padres were the Away Team for this game. The name convention for each attribute is pretty straightforward in this file as well as for all the files in the API.

Example JSON

Look at all this fun information that can be used to build a scoreboard!
