Gemini is now available in most regions, but please note that there is no free tier in the EU - because they can't use your data for training their models, apparently.

Additionally they have significantly reduced the rate limit for the free tier for all users (down to 15 requests a minute for Gemini 1.0 Pro, from 60) and automatically start charging you if you go over the limit. However, you do get a pretty generous free trial credit balance.

If you are out of free credit it is possible that GPT-4o is the cheaper option now - and its benchmark scores for translation are the new best in class, without the malformed responses that often result in unpaseable translations with Gemini. Based on my initial tests it seems to be very good, even with poor quality source material - and exceptionally fast.
