This adds to our knowledge of what is going on in the minds of translators and how it shapes their translation work.\nAnother topic I enjoy contributing to is the status of translators and interpreters\u0026rsquo; languages as native/non-native. The effects this has on the production, reception, and perception of translations/interpretations (and of translators/interpreters) fascinate me.\nRecently, I have become excited about statistics, quantitative methods and transparent, open research practices. In this regard, we have much to catch up on and need to improve our discipline\u0026rsquo;s standards considerably. The TSF assumes that intentional pauses flag stretches where subjects concentrate on unrecorded cognitive processes such as planning and assessment. The interspersed typing stretches are task segments, with or without text, where basic subtasks may be observed, mainly adding new text, changing existing text, and searching for information. Accumulated experience and planning allow translators to lump strategically similar activities together, in order to spare efforts and task switching costs while maximizing efficiency. Hence, task segments may contain activities of just one such subtask or many. Translation fluency is a key notion of the TSF, operationalized through many indicators such as typing speed, prior pause length, TS (task segment) length in events, text length as full words, number of typos and respites (=mid inter-keystroke intervals), subtask(s), and the like. The approach seems particularly sensitive to translation expertise levels and may be applied with variations to other multilectal mediated communication tasks. The TSF suggests that adding new text, changing existing copy, and online searching qualify as subtasks with psychological reality in that they are behavioral bundles with their own set of rules and palette of behaviors. As experience is accumulated, translators will tend to devote full task-segments to such single subtasks to be more efficient and avoid unnecessary higher mental loads derived from maintaining more than one set and palette active. Using a wide variety of informants and texts, this research project sought to determine whether forward task-switching (spillover) effects would be proof of such psychological reality. Three indicators were used: (1) the length of the previous pause chunking the task flow into task segments; (2) the duration of the first five interkeystroke intervals (IKIs); and (3) the dwell time of the five first keypresses. The results of all three indicators attest to task-switching effects and hence suggest that the translation subtasks in the TSF have psychological reality. I depart from the notion of target audience as applied to written translation. Aspects to this concept and the terminology of audience in translation studies are briefly discussed. Then I turn to translation process research to examine two empirical studies and one theoretical paper for insights into researching translators' target audience orientation. Next, I introduce concepts from social cognition research that might contribute to give a cognitive account of translators' behavior towards the target audience. I then touch upon the relation of the functional neurocognitive network presumably supporting target audience orientation with other neurocognitive networks that seem particularly relevant to translation. As a complement, I present a research design for empirically verifying my claim about what enables translators' target audience orientation, and gaining further insight into the relations between target audience orientation, translation process and translation product. To introduce current theoretical developments from cognitive science, we offer a conceptual framework that conceives these apparent dichotomies as complementary perspectives and helps us to cope with the nested and embedded nature of translatorial cognition and action. For this purpose, we specify a dynamic network analytical model which treats acts of individual cognition and (inter)action as being constitutively interwoven with their social, symbolic and material environments and combine all its elements into a coherent dynamic process perspective. Allein die Tatsache, dass jemand in die sog. Muttersprache (Her-Übersetzung) übersetzt, soll schon für die Qualität des Translats bürgen, während das Übersetzen in eine sog. Nicht-Muttersprache (Hin-Übersetzung) automatisch ein minderwertige(re)s Resultat zur Folge haben soll. Dieser angeblich essenzielle Unterschied zwischen den beiden Übersetzungsrichtungen wird damit begründet, dass die Kompetenz einer Übersetzerin oder eines Übersetzers in ihrer oder seiner sog. Muttersprache grundsätzlich anders sei als die Kompetenz in einer sog. Nicht-Muttersprache. Ich komme aber wie andere WissenschaftlerInnen in der Translationswissenschaft zu dem Schluss, dass dem nicht so ist, und der diffuse Begriff Muttersprache sich nicht für die Beschreibung der Sprach-/Kulturkompetenz und die Bewertung der Leistung von professionellen TranslatorInnen eignet, da er sowohl ideologisch vorbelastet ist, als auch mit den Maximen der Expertise und Professionalität unvereinbar ist. Im Gegensatz zu den Begriffen Muttersprache und MuttersprachlerIn, die vermeintliche Kompetenz von der Abstammung und Herkunft einer Person ableiten und mit dieser gleichsetzen, betont der Begriff der Expertise die fundamentale Lernbarkeit kulturellen und sprachlichen Handlungswissens, ohne auf essenzialistische, hermetisch abgeschlossene sprachliche und kulturelle Identitäten rekurrieren zu müssen. Die zitierten Daten und Studien aus der Translationswissenschaft belegen nicht nur, dass das Übersetzen und Dolmetschen in eine sog. Nicht-Muttersprache eine gängige Praxis auf dem Kommunikationsmarkt ist, sondern auch die Unverlässlichkeit und Unzulässigkeit, Translatqualität mit der Muttersprache der TranslatorInnen und der Übersetzungsrichtung begründen zu wollen.
