Given the Matrix channel has been deprecated or the link on the community page is out of date

I don't think https://matrix.to/#/#OSFW-Heads:matrix.org is deprecated, there are regular messages. I forgot about Discussions which are even enabled here, could be worth mentioning at https://osresearch.net/community/.

I wonder if treating GitHub and Matrix the same in terms of requirements helps or makes things harder. Maybe it makes sense to allow quick free-form questions on Matrix and move to GitHub if subject turns out to be non-trivial. Concentrating on a single place could make maintaining easier and avoid requiring to search in several places (yet to have a good Matrix search experience). People that don't want to register on GitHub could still report things on Matrix by following GitHub instructions as an exception.
