Mypy is silently failing #26

Mypy is not running correctly, so we've seen some type errors that shouldn't have slipped through.

It's failing because of an import-error. Frustratingly, Mypy has a returncode of 1 in that case, as well as in the case of finding issues.

Fixed by #30... now we need to address the errors that slipped through while it was broken!
