Fortunately, the src_prepare is not exported by default, so as long as you don't define src_prepare yourself, or, if you do, implement it as:
src_prepare() { # stuff here default }
then PATCHES get applied.
PATCHES
However, if you implement it as:

PATCHES don't get applied.
