The color column in vim should be a lighter color. Not sure if this is configurable or just a result of my color scheme in my terminal.

Worth noting, I just tested our a new color scheme in both vim and iTerm on my MBP and the harshness of the line seems to be reduced. See here: https://github.com/whatyouhide/gotham-contrib and https://github.com/whatyouhide/vim-gotham
Not sure how I feel on the colors yet, but I might be keeping them which would effectively close this issue.
