I'm not planning on working on this, but I want to add my thoughts about some open questions, especially influenced by my using spacemacs:

There are times when modal editing is not really appropriate -- for example, in a helm buffer. Or is it appropriate in this case?
Global key bindings should make sense. It's very annoying to have to switch between emacs and vim mode and have the space key switch too, and have to go to M-m for the spacemacs menu. The whole experience feels awkward.

Overall, I think there is still lots of room to explore in this space
