Improve handling of failed HTTP/2 requests

**Description**
In load test scenarios, when the server is overwhelmed and starts closing connections, the client may not properly release acquired connections back to the connection pool.

Eventually, the connection pool may enter a degenerate behavior (for example, using only 1 connection).
