This almost unbelievable story took place in the summer of 1942 [when the Germans were at the Volga and it seemed that their victory was a foregone conclusion. The story shocked everyone] and was so popular that at one time they said about the ravine: “That Babi Yar, where the football players were shot.” She then walked in the form of a legend, which is so good and complete that I want to quote it in its entirety. Here she is.

The Ukrainian football team "Dynamo" (Kyiv) was one of the best teams in the country before the war. [In football battles between Kyiv and Moscow there is always something more than just a sporting passion, namely the issue of oppressed Ukrainian honor.] Kyiv fans therefore adored their players, especially the famous goalkeeper Trusevich.
Из-за окружения команда не смогла эвакуироваться. Сначала они сидели тихо, устраивались на работу кто куда, встречались. И, тоскуя по футболу, стали устраивать тренировки на каком-то пустыре. Об этом узнали мальчишки, жители, а потом дошло до немецких властей.
Due to the encirclement, the team was unable to evacuate. At first they sat quietly, got a job in all directions, met. And, yearning for football, they began to arrange training in some wasteland. The boys, the residents found out about this, and then it came to the German authorities.
Они вызвали футболистов и сказали: «Зачем вам пустырь? Вот пустует прекрасный стадион, пожалуйста, тренируйтесь. Мы не против спорта, наоборот».
They called the players and said: “Why do you need a wasteland? Here is a beautiful stadium empty, please train. We are not against sports, on the contrary.”
Динамовцы согласились и перешли на стадион. Спустя некоторое время немцы вызывают их [(обратите внимание, как легенда точна: власти всегда вызывают),] и говорят: «Мирная жизнь в Киеве налаживается, уже работают кинотеатры, опера, пора открывать стадион. Пусть все видят, что мирное восстановление идет полным ходом. И мы предлагаем вам встречу со сборной вооруженных сил Германии».
Dynamo agreed and moved to the stadium. After some time, the Germans call them [(note how accurate the legend is: the authorities always call),] and say: “Peaceful life in Kyiv is getting better, cinemas, an opera are already working, it's time to open the stadium. Let everyone see that the peaceful reconstruction is in full swing. And we offer you a meeting with the German Armed Forces.”

Стадион был полон; половину трибун занимали немцы, прибыло высокое начальство, сам комендант, они были веселые и предвкушали удовольствие. Худшие места заняли украинцы Киева, голодные, оборванные.
The stadium was full; half of the stands were occupied by the Germans, the high authorities arrived, the commandant himself, they were cheerful and looked forward to the pleasure. The worst places were occupied by the Ukrainians of Kyiv, hungry, ragged.
Игра началась. Динамовцы были истощены и слабы. Откормленные немецкие футболисты грубили, откровенно сбивали с ног, но судья ничего не замечал. Немцы на трибунах заорали от восторга, когда в ворота киевлян был забит первый гол. Другая половина стадиона мрачно молчала: и тут, в футболе, они оплевывали нас.
The game has begun. Dynamo were exhausted and weak. Well-fed German football players were rude, frankly knocked down, but the referee did not notice anything. The Germans in the stands screamed with delight when the first goal was scored against the Kyivites. The other half of the stadium was gloomy silent: and here, in football, they spat on us.

Then the Dynamo, as they say, took. They were filled with rage. It is unknown where the powers came from. They began to outplay the Germans and, at the cost of a desperate breakthrough, scored a return goal. Now the German tribunes were disappointedly silent, while the rest shouted and hugged.

Dynamo remembered their pre-war class and after a successful combination scored the second goal.

The ragged people in the stands are shouting: "Hurrah!", "The Germans are being beaten!"
Это «Немцев бьют!» уже выходило за пределы спорта. Немцы заметались перед трибунами, приказывали: «Прекратить!» — и строчили в воздух. Кончился первый тайм, команды ушли на отдых.
This is "The Germans are being beaten!" already out of the sport. The Germans rushed about in front of the stands, ordered: "Stop!" and scribbled into the air. The first half is over, the teams have gone to rest.
В перерыве в раздевалку к динамовцам зашел офицер из ложи коменданта и очень вежливо сказал следующее: «Вы молодцы, показали хороший футбол, и мы это оценили. Свою спортивную честь вы поддержали достаточно. Но теперь, во втором тайме, играйте спокойнее, вы сами понимаете: нужно проиграть. Это нужно. Команда германской армии никогда еще не проигрывала, тем более на оккупированных территориях. Это приказ. Если вы не проиграете — будете расстреляны».
During the break, an officer from the commandant's box came to the Dynamo team and very politely said the following: “Well done, you showed good football, and we appreciated it. You have supported your sporting honor enough. But now, in the second half, play calmer, you yourself understand: you need to lose. It is necessary. The team of the German army has never lost, especially in the occupied territories. That's an order. If you don't lose, you will be shot."
Динамовцы молча выслушали и пошли на поле. Судья просвистел, начался второй тайм. Динамовцы играют хорошо и забивают в ворота немцев третий гол. Половина стадиона ревет, многие плачут от радости; немецкая половина возмущенно голгочет. Динамовцы забивают еще один гол. Немцы на трибунах вскакивают, хватаются за пистолеты. Вокруг зеленого поля побежали жандармы, оцепляя его.
Dynamo silently listened and went to the field. The referee whistled and the second half began. Dynamo play well and score the third goal against the Germans. Half the stadium is roaring, many are crying for joy; the German half goggles indignantly. Dynamo score one more goal. The Germans jump up in the stands, grab their pistols. Gendarmes ran around the green field, cordoning it off.

Судья скомкал время, дал финальный свисток; жандармы, не дожидаясь, пока футболисты пройдут в раздевалку, схватили динамовцев тут же на поле, посадили в закрытую машину и отвезли в Бабий Яр.
The referee crumpled time, blew the final whistle; the gendarmes, without waiting for the players to go to the locker room, grabbed the Dynamo players right there on the field, put them in a closed car and took them to Babi Yar.
Такого случая еще не знала история мирового футбола. В этой игре у украинских динамовцев не было другого оружия, они превратили в оружие сам футбол, совершив бессмертный подвиг. Они выигрывали, зная, что идут на смерть, и они пошли на это, чтобы напомнить народу о его достоинстве.
Such a case has not yet known the history of world football. In this game, the Ukrainian Dynamo had no other weapon, they turned football itself into a weapon, having accomplished an immortal feat. They won knowing they were going to their deaths, and they did so to remind the people of their dignity.
В действительности эта история не была такой цельной, хотя закончилась именно так, но, как все в жизни, была сложнее уже хотя бы потому, что происходила не одна игра, а несколько, и злоба немцев поднималась от матча к матчу.
In reality, this story was not so solid, although it ended just like that, but, like everything in life, it was more complicated, if only because there were not one game, but several, and the anger of the Germans rose from match to match.
В оккупации динамовцы оказались не потому, что не могли выехать, а они были мобилизованы в Красную Армию и попали в плен. Большая часть их стала работать на хлебозаводе № 1 грузчиками, и сперва из них составили команду хлебозавода.
The Dynamo people were occupied not because they could not leave, but they were mobilized into the Red Army and were taken prisoner. Most of them began to work at bakery No. 1 as loaders, and at first they made up the bakery team.
