Personalized sidebar Linear's application sidebar now supports customization to better fit your personal workflows. You can reorder items, hide items you don't use often, and decide how unread notifications should be shown: with a count or dot. The Workspace section includes new links to Teams and Customers (if you've enabled Customer requests). You can also hide items you don't need frequently behind a More menu. You can also drag & drop to reorder items. (BACK TO TOP)

Welkom! In our paper, Understanding LLMs Requires More Than Statistical Generalization, we argue that current machine learning theory cannot explain the interesting emergent properties of Large Language Models, such as reasoning or in-context learning. Overview The past few months have been exciting times for Slack’s CI infrastructure. After years of developer frustration with Jenkins (everything from security issues to downtime to generally poor UX) internal pressure led us to move a majority of Slack’s CI jobs from Jenkins to GitHub Actions.  My intern project at Slack this summer involved… The post Migration Automation: Easing the Jenkins → GHA shift with help from AI appeared first on Engineering at Slack . At AWS re:Invent 2023, Amazon CTO Werner Vogels delivered a talk on the laws of frugal architecture . While I initially filed away those insights to review later, a year of cloud architecture experience crystallized a fundamental truth: in cloud computing, cost isn’t just a financial consideration — it is a first-class architectural concern through which we should design and optimize our systems. A lot happened for me this year. I continued learning the details of fund accounting at Carta, which is likely the most complex product domain I’ve worked in. This master's thesis at Lund University Sweden  explores how CockroachDB 's transactional performance can be improved by using tightly synchronized clocks. The paper addresses two questions: how to integrate high-precision clock synchronization into CockroachDB and the resulting impact on performance. However, this approach has limitations, particularly in handling transactional conflicts within a predefined uncertainty interval. They ran into practical challenges during implementation.  (BACK TO TOP)

Figuring out what to do is a big part of senior tech roles. Senior Engineers and Engineering Managers often struggle to define technical roadmaps. In reality, good technical vision is often a very simple and boring review of small amounts of data. An easy playbook for technical roadmap development is Problem Driven Development. In short, it means you develop your technical roadmap based on fixing things that are going wrong. It sounds simple, but it can be very empowering.g.g. (BACK TO TOP)

The hardest part for me about collaborating with junior programmers, whether it's in open source or at work, is avoiding the premise trap. “What did you learn today?” It’s a question many of us heard as a child. Maybe a parent asked you on the way home from school, or a sibling around the dinner table, or even a curious aunt or uncle at a family gathering. But when was the last time someone asked you, as an adult, what you actually learned at the end of a day? The truth is, as we grow older, the expectation to be constantly learning diminishes. Since our early days as a company, we’ve fostered a culture of continuous learning. (BACK TO TOP)
