Mobile app is unusable with larger photos library

The bug

Mobile app freezes randomly at launch and a while after on every screen. I believe it's because of my 53k assets but it discourages me from using the app. Here's the video showing the freezes:

My wife has 51k assets and the app is smooth - many people have much more than that. Is your pgdata Docker volume on a hard drive or SSD? Anything in the server and/or app logs?

It’s on a hard drive, however it freezes only on the iPhone I upload my photos from, on Android and web it seems to work fine.
It may be because all of my assets are still also on iCloud. I use Optimize Storage option and wanted to keep my photos on the phone until I’m sure that I’m ready to move elsewhere.

You might be able to toggle the "Prefer remote assets" toggle and see if that makes a difference

It’s definitely different. Everything loads fine, it’s just that the app freezes for a few seconds at launch when trying to start backup. And it also happens before iOS 18

I second this issue. I have ~90k assets, for past few releases, immich performance on mobile degraded significantly. Especially on iPhone, I observe a lot of freezes when scrolling or deleting files. On android it seems better, but I also have freezes or popups that immich is not responding, sometimes even when it is in background. Also after starting app it takes notable time to sync with phone storage (pick up new photos). It should be near instant, but takes 30s or more. Also, my new photos are pretty much never uploaded unless I enter the app and wait for it to sync. It wasn't like that before.

I'm also having this issue with our 70k images - the iOS app on my iPhone 15 Pro is unbearably slow to respond and it's tied directly with whether it's currently syncing or not (basically to use the app, have to turn off syncing and then restart the app). I already did a bulk import of our apple photos onto the immich server, but the phone doesn't care and wants to reupload everything... it's been attempting to sync for over a week since I started using immach and only made it through 10k images far. Background sync barely functions and doesn't work most of the time, presumably due to a deficiency in the iOS background task code. The network connection and server is overspec'd and solid... when files DO sync, they sync fast.. but it's clear to me that the iOS app has some significant issue with managing it's background sync task and also seems to handle what appears to be significantly-locking tasks in the main UI thread. I really want to love this as the rest of it is amazing, but the syncing situation on iOS isn't something I can get past for me and the wife.
