Given the soon-to-be-released of S-102 PS 3.0.0, this ticket is about collecting information of when software vendors (e.g., CARIS, ESRI, etc.) / libraries (e.g., GDAL) are expecting to fully/partially support the first operational release of S-102 PS.

I know you didn't want to hear that, but our development is finished, except the multiple vertical datums.
We are ready to provided German test datasets for S-102 3.0.0.

We are interested in other software that can read S-102 3.0.0.

@RohdeBSH, that's excellent! When do you plan to also support multiple vertical datums? Is the library open source (or any plan to do that)?

As we are now in the final iteration for ArcGIS Pro 3.4 release development and S-102 v 3.0 final has still not been officially released, it is impossible for us to fully support S-102 v. 3.0 for ArcGIS Pro 3.4. We have a few 3.0 datasets courtesy of BSH, but none that include multiple vertical datums. We seek additional S-102 v. 3.0 datasets for use in development and testing from anyone who can furnish them. I would be most grateful. Data examples can be sent to me directly via my email.

It is possible that v. 3.0 datasets will render in ArcGIS Pro 3.4, but we cannot guarantee that the feature attribute table will be accessible in ArcGIS Pro 3.4. Therefore, we have taken the decision to support S-102 v.2.2 in ArcGIS Pro (specifically ArcGIS Bathymetry) 3.4, where internal and catalog exchange set metadata fields can be recognized and their metadata values automatically extracted and populated in the Bathymetric Information System.

Our current plans are to support S-102 v. 3.0 (with internal/external metadata and feature attribute table rendering) in ArcGIS Pro 3.5, whose development will kick off in October this year.

@giumas
The software library is not open source because it was financed with German tax money. The BSH solution is also not really a single library. It is rather a complete software suite consisting of different components (e.g. PostgreSQL, PostGIS, Apache Tomcat, plus our own developments).
We also have it easier than the commercial software manufacturers. We only implement what is actually needed at BSH. Furthermore, we don't have to cover all the possibilities. For example, we haven't implemented uncertainty at all because we don't have the data anyway.

I had planned to implement multiple vertical datums by the end of 2024. Unfortunately, we have now received new restrictions for the S-102 from the German Navy. Their implementation now has more priority because the restrictions affect both the Baltic Sea and the North Sea. In this respect, the multiple vertical datums only affect the North Sea and the NOK (Kiel Canal). So I would say that we won't have implemented this before Q2/2025.

@TDYCARHugh, would you share the CARIS plans for S-102 PS 3.0?

An updated NIWC testbed should be made available through the IHO registry within the next few weeks.

Excerpt from S-102PT19 minutes:

The OEMs shared their status on software support for PS ed. 3.0.0.

  • NIWC – within the next couple of weeks. They are after more test data, some S-164 data.
  • Germany – they are looking for a view software. They have their own production software.
  • SevenCs – they work with testbed reports at the moment with different S-100 products together. The
data version is there but not yet available.
  • ESRI Inc – their next release of ArcGIS Pro, version 3.4 (scheduled for November/December 2024),
does not support ed. 3.0.0, but ed. 2.2. Ed. 3.0.0 will be supported in ArcGIS Pro version 3.5 which is
scheduled to be released in the spring 2025. ESRI is also looking for test data.
  • Teledyne CARIS – no participants at the meeting.
  • NOAA – S100py python library is being updated to produce ed. 3.0.0 and they are aiming for
October for a release. NOAA will be using that in their production pipeline. They plan to fund GDAL
support for 3.0.0 but that should not be done until middle of next year. It is open and publicly
available. NOAA will also continue to work for support visualization of VRTs with S-102 for all
layers (for example, in QGIS), including different thematic views of the QoB metadata columns.

The latest release of our testbed should support S-102 3.0.0 although it has had limited testing. It is available here: https://registry.iho.int/repository/list.do
