https://www.jsonfeed.org/ is an alternative feed format, using JSON instead of XML. https://www.jsonfeed.org/code/ links to a couple of Jekyll JSON feed plugins, one of which is basically a fork of jekyll-feed.

If we can do this straightforwardly, there seems to be no harm in supporting this format, even though I'm not convinced there's much uptake (yet?).
