+ »Suchergebnisse«

+Digital scholarly editions have revolutionized the global
+ accessibility of scholarly editions – but what are the standards that they
+ adhere to (or should adhere to) in order to meet basic requirements of long-term
+ availability? How are digital editions currently available, what parts of them
+ are available for what purpose? And are they merely accessible or are they
+ discoverable as well? These are some of the questions that the field of digital
+ scholarly editing still needs to address.
The framework in this case is provided not only by the field of
+ digital scholarly editing but also by efforts within Germany to standardize and
+ stabilize research data infrastructures. For this reason, the German National
+ Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI) was initiated between 2016–2018.
In order to provide reviewers with a guideline to assist them in
+ their reviewing, criteria for evaluating the FAIRness of editions (Gengnagel, Neuber and Schulz
+ 2022) have been developed in the context of Text+ to supplement the
+ IDE’s general set of reviewing criteria (Sahle 2014). The current issue is the first to be
+ published from the responses to the Call for Reviews published in April
+ 2022.
+
The editions reviewed have some similarities and differences, some of + which may affect their outcome and influence the implementation of FAIR + principles. Generally, the editions originate from various disciplines, + including literary studies, philosophy, history or regional history, and history + of science. This represents the broad spectrum of disciplines and research areas + that is also covered in Text+ with regard to text and language data. Moreover, + the reviewed resources represent the variety of sources (drafts, notebooks, + charters, letters, diaries) and the different models and traditions to capture, + enrich, and present them (e. g. genetic edition, historical-critical edition, + diplomatic edition) which characterize the field of scholarly editing.
+Among the five reviewed editions, two editions - “Briefportal + Leibniz” and “Walter Benjamin Digital” - are not primarily digital editions (i. + e. born-digital) but rather supplements to printed editions. Accordingly, these + editions are likely to have fewer resources available which affects the + selection of documents and the text presentation on the one hand and the + complexity of technical implementation and application of FAIR principles on the + other. Furthermore, the maturity of the edition also plays a role in the + implementation of FAIR principles. For instance, the edition of the diaries of + Fürst Christian II. is still work-in-progress and the Königsfelden edition is a + relatively young resource, thus for both editions adjustments to the FAIR + compliance can still be expected. The benefits of making research data available + are particularly evident in the review on the Fontane edition, which, in addition to an + evaluation by means of a discursive text, also carries out a machine evaluation + of the encoding. At the same time, however, the resource and its strict + licensing also show that accessible data does not necessarily guarantee + reusability.
+In summary, after examining the first five reviews in terms of + developing recommendations for applying FAIR principles in digital editions in + the context of Text+, we can conclude: First, digital editions are living objects, often + published work-in-progress, which must be taken into account when implementing + and assessing the FAIR principles, for example when there are different versions + of an edition. Second, depending on the project context and available resources + (manpower, time, financing, technical know-how), the application of the FAIR + principles may vary, which in turn means that recommendations on how to + implement the principles should be scalable accordingly. Third, policies and + modes of data provision such as the FAIR Principles, Open Access, and Creative + Commons are often used and interpreted synonymously but need to be clearly + differentiated and related to each other.
+We were very pleased with the response to the Call for Reviews and + can already announce that there will be a second issue in the near future. The + five reviews show once again how diverse the editing landscape is and thus also + the implementation of the FAIR principles.
+Enjoy the RIDE!
+The editors, Tessa Gengnagel, Frederike Neuber, and Daniela Schulz, March + 2023.

+The scholarly digital edition of the
Theodor Fontane (1819–1898) is one of the most iconic German writers in + the 19th century; a fact attested by the major commemorations that were dedicated to + him in 2018 on the 120th anniversary of his death and in 2019 on the 200th + anniversary of his birth. In the context of these jubilees, the digital edition of + Fontane’s notebooks attracted media interest and strongly informed the 2019 fontane.200 exhibitions (Bisky + 2019).
+Edited by Gabriele Radecke and her team and based at the University of + Göttingen’s Theodor-Fontane-Arbeitsstelle and the Göttingen State and University + Library, the edition offers a fresh and timely approach to Fontane’s notebooks and + thereby contributes to current debates on materiality in literary studies and textual + scholarship. The edition project was funded by the German Research Foundation (2011–2019) and the Brougier Seisser + Cleve Werhahn Foundation (BSCW) (2018) and is still a work in progress. As + will be shown in the following, the edition has set itself ambitious goals and has + evolved over the years through the participation of a large project team.
+The following paragraphs outline the digital edition’s contents, + objectives, editorial methods and practices, as well as the online presentation of + edition materials (see Sahle 2014). A + separate section of this review discusses the application of the FAIR principles + (Gengnagel et al. 2022). + Finally, we address some open questions and areas of further development.
+The digital edition presents all of Theodor Fontane’s 67 notebooks
+ that have been preserved from the period 1860 to 1886. Those notebooks contain
+ snippets of writing, such as literary drafts, prefaces, tables of contents,
+ literary criticism, draft letters, observations made during journeys, records of
+ conversations and lectures, notes on theatrical performances, descriptions of
+ museal exhibits and buildings, excerpts of inscriptions and books, diary-like
+ entries, to-do lists, financial calculations, and timetables; as well as several
+ hundred drawn sketches and pasted clippings that add up to a non-linear pastiche
+ of text and image. Fontane collected these heterogeneous materials to serve as
+ ‘raw material’ in his creative process. They can, therefore, offer
+ insights into the development of his works as well as into the minutiae of the
+ writer’s daily life and work, especially in the context of Fontane’s travels to
+ and within Bohemia, Silesia, Denmark, France, Italy, Switzerland, Austria, and
+ Germany. 21 notebooks are related to Fontane’s travels within the German province
+ of Brandenburg, which became the basis for his later book series
The edition offers facsimiles, diplomatic transcriptions, TEI/XML + code, “edited texts” (approximating reading versions of the texts), contents (per + page and per notebook), commentary (partly available), and detailed metadata. The + latter has a specific focus on material features and the physical conditions of + the original objects, including hands, descriptions of handwriting, text types, + contents, writing devices, format, and binding. The documentation of the editing + principles is very detailed. Furthermore, there are lists of abbreviations, + special characters, and editorial markings, bibliographies of primary and + secondary literature, as well as various indices (events, institutions, persons, + places, works in general and by Fontane, and periodicals). Finally, the website + offers paratextual information on the project, the project team, and related + institutions, as well as citation recommendations and licensing information.
+The edition identifies its approach as “genetic-critical”, without
+ further elaborating on the precise objectives of such an undertaking. The question
+ whether an edition can count as ‘genetic’ is often difficult to answer, and there
+ is a large grey area between what may be regarded as a fully genetic edition, on
+ the one hand, and what might be more appropriately described as a “documentary
+ edition […] which attempts to reproduce a certain degree of the peculiarities of
+ the document itself, even if this may cause disruption to the normal flow of the
+ text presented by the document” (Pierazzo 2014), on the other hand. The detailed section on the “Prinzipien der textkritischen und genetischen Apparate” [“Principles of
+ critical and genetic apparatuses”] documents how (micro)genetic information –
+ revision processes that include deletions, additions, and overwritings within the
+ same document – are encoded in the TEI/XML markup and represented on the user
+ interface.
What makes this digital edition unique is its explicit focus on the
+ materiality of the documents. Previous publications of the contents of Fontane’s notebooks followed a
+ thematic approach and would blur the boundaries between the genres of notebook
+ and diary. Rather than presenting the notes detached from their original
+ material and medial contexts, the
In the edition’s introduction, the project situates itself in an increased scholarly interest in the material practices of
+ literary production. Thus, it forms part of a larger paradigm shift
+ towards a ‘material turn’ in the humanities that has drawn attention to the
+ material contexts and conditions of cultural activity.
The project editors have used XML technologies to encode, annotate,
+ and interlink the data gathered from the 67 notebooks. Paired with the TEI
+ vocabulary, the edition follows common and standardized practices to ensure the
+ accessibility, reusability, and long-term preservation of the data. A custom
+ data schema was created as an ODD/XML (‘One Document Does it all’), which can
+ be converted into various schema languages for XML (e.g. RELAX NG).
A quantitative analysis of the ODD provides valuable insights into
+ the data model.<add>
, <line>
,
+ <seg>
, <surface>
, and
+ <zone>
are the top five elements. This result reflects
+ the edition’s choice to make use of the TEI Embedded Transcription model, which is intended to encode texts
+ in a way that is closely intertwined with the representation of physical
+ surfaces. The following table shows the frequency of these TEI element nodes in
+ comparison with that of the <note type="editorial">
node in
+ all <sourceDoc>
element node). Whereas
+ the top five elements refer to the material character of the encoded sources,
+ the editorial notes are relatively sparse.
The TEI/XML files contain diplomatic transcriptions of all texts
+ with a detailed markup of material features which strive for a representation
+ that approximates the original materials. Each page
+ (<surface>
) is divided into segments of geometrically
+ defined dimensions (e. g. <zone ulx="2.9" uly="11.1" lrx="8.9"
+ lry="11.3">
) that determine the exact positions of text parts. The
+ line margins are precisely measured (e. g. <line
+ style="margin-left:2.4cm">
ſtändlichkeiten
+ und</line>
), and the approximate orientation of lines is
+ recorded (e. g. <zone […] rotate="330" […]>
). Furthermore,
+ different hands, scripts, as well as sizes and qualities of handwriting (e. g.
+ <handShift script="hasty"/>
) are documented in meticulous
+ detail. The markup also exactly renders the idiosyncratic shapes of underlines
+ (e. g. <hi>St<seg id="B01_2v_m" next="#B01_2v_n"
+ style="text-decoration:underline"
+ rend="underline-style:half-s-shaped(upper-left)">ände</seg></hi>
),
+ overwritings, deletions, additions, and special characters. Finally, material
+ features of the writing and the material carrier, such as writing implements,
+ inserted paper pockets, pasted clippings, or traces of torn or cut pages, are
+ encoded (e. g. <surface […] type="pocket"
+ subtype="angeklebte_cremefarbige_Tasche_von_Fontane_angefertigt_-_Angeklebtes_Blatt"
+ attachment="partially_glued" […]>
). High-resolution facsimiles
+ reproduce the pages of the notebooks including front and back covers as well as
+ inserted attachments.
The <teiHeader>
lists the metadata, providing
+ detailed information on the materiality of the edited notebooks. In addition to
+ standard descriptive elements, such as those related to the source documents
+ and their archival and publication history, the descriptions of the physical
+ objects include measurements, writing implements, attachments and pastings,
+ traces of torn pages, as well as definitions of handwriting qualities.
Beside the header’s material orientation, it includes four versions of a table of contents as part of the
+ <sourceDesc>: <list type="authorial">

+ the editor. The following table shows the number of <item>
+ elements within each of the four categories. Radecke’s tables of contents
+ include 913 items, each of which provides a topic and description as well as
+ references to specific pages in the TEI document. The exhaustive information
+ provided by the editor offers fresh pathways into the wealth of materials
+ contained in Fontane’s notebooks and must be considered one of the edition’s
+ major achievements.
Another resource encoded in the TEI documents that is related to
+ contents rather than to materiality is the
node,
+ within the <profileDesc>
in the TEI header, which offers a
+ detailed summary. As the table below shows, this is the case in 22 of the 67
+ notebooks only. Within the <sourceDoc>
part of the TEI
+ documents, as mentioned above, editorial notes offer scholarly comments.
+ Counting nodes and words helped to find out more about the extent of these
+ comments. As was shown further above, there are 419 such comments; 414 of these
+ have a word count greater than 5.
+ The above table shows that, for more than two thirds of the notebooks, + no abstracts have been added, indicating that the scholarly work is incomplete. + The same can be said with regard to the editorial comments. In figure 1, a bar chart offers insight + into how many editorial notes were created for each notebook, showing that, + while 47 notebooks have at least one such scholarly comment, 20 notebooks have + none. Again, this points to a lack of coherence and consistency within the + edition: whereas some parts demonstrate a high degree of scholarly engagement, + others lack such editorial attention.
+The following two tables focus on data annotation and enrichment.
+ The first table lists all entities divided into six categories: events,
+ literature (cited in the TEI header), institutions, places, persons, and works
+ (mentioned by Fontane in his notebooks). To differentiate between entities,
+ each category uses a different namespace; the prefixes for the namespaces (such
+ as "eve"
) are documented in the header as part of the
+ <encodingDesc>
. With more than forty thousand nodes, the
+ Fontane notebook edition (with a total word count of 415,489) would seem
+ appropriately enriched quantitatively (see Rockwell 2012). However, as the second table
+ shows, only about 14% of these nodes are linked to authority files (such as
+ GND, Wikidata, and OpenStreetMap), improving the quality of the markup of these
+ entities. Furthermore, 2,129 annotated dates (<date>
)
+ provide researchers with historical context.
The web application is built as an eXist-db application with
+ modules from the SADE Scalable Architecture for Digital Editions. The application
+ combines XQuery and XSLT scripts using Apache Ant for the build process. As a
+ tool for text transcription, annotation, and other encoding, the project has
+ used TextGrid; according to the editors
+ The start page of the edition website (see fig. 2) follows common visual patterns of digital + editions. The navigation bar includes a logo that links to the start page as + well as buttons that open drop-down lists (“Notizbuch-Edition”, + “(Meta-)Edition”, “Projekt”) or link to individual pages (“Zitation”, + “Nutzung”). On the right-hand side, a visually highlighted button (“Suche”) + opens a small search input field. The bottom area of the page contains contact + details and funder information as well as a footer with links to the imprint, + data-protection policy, and suggested citation. The central part of the page + includes a brief introduction to the project and links to further project + details and a “project flyer” (which yields a 404 with an, admittedly cute, cat picture). Below, and visually set + apart, a section lists information on the progressive release of edition + materials. A right-hand news section (“Neuigkeiten”) records project-related + academic publications and presentations.
+The search input takes users to a search page, which permits a + full-text document search (there is no site search), and yields results in KWIC + format. The search documentation of the edition provides a detailed explanation + of the supported features. In addition to features such as phrasal search and a + thesaurus function, search features include wildcards and filters (facets) as + well as Boolean operators and regular expressions. The filter parameters to + limit the search range from entity categories, like persons or places, to + specific writing styles (“Duktus”). The documentation also lists features which are not supported as well as search limitations. For + instance, there is no option to limit the search to specific notebooks.
+The usability of the search features is restricted. Searching for + very specific results, with a small amount of search hits, works very well. + However, when the text search is left empty and no filters are selected, the + search engine tries to fetch all data and loads for several minutes. Also, when + only selecting filters, the amount of data the engine fetches can be very + large. In addition, search hits do not seem reliable when comparing the number + of hits against the values displayed next to each filter category. This problem + could be related to fetching too much data. We recommend switching off data + fetching when no search values are selected (that is, when no search terms are + entered and no filters are selected) and implementing limits that instruct + users to specify their search input.
++ The edition is still in beta stage, despite the long run of the + project. The individual documents are nested within a hierarchical system, with + a click distance of four clicks from the start page to the edition materials. + In the “Notizbuch-Edition” drop-down menu, users can select from higher-order + “boxes” (“Kasten A” to “Kasten E”), which correspond to the traditional + organizing principle applied to the Fontane notebooks. Within each box + category, individual notebooks can be accessed via different views (see fig. 3): facsimile (“Digitalisate”), + transcription (“Transkriptionsansicht”), “edited text” (“Edierter Text”), and + TEI/XML views. In addition, there are: a notebook-specific + “Überblickskommentar” (literally, ‘general commentary’; in fact, however, + detailed metadata); indices of persons, works, periodicals, places, events, and + institutions; and table of contents.
++ The synoptic view offers the facsimile, diplomatic transcription, and + TEI/XML code of each page (see fig. + 4). In another tab of the third window, a table of contents provides + links to the individual parts of the notebook. Only in full-screen mode (in + Chrome v106.0.5249.119), a “Stellenkommentar” tab showing individual editorial + comments (if available, see above) will appear or can else be selected from a + drop-down list; from that list, an index tab can be opened as well. By clicking + the digital image, users will be taken to the Mirador Viewer, which allows them + to engage with the images in close detail. Rendering the original writing, + which is often difficult to read, into a (machine-)readable format, the + diplomatic transcriptions especially aim to meticulously replicate the visual + appearance of the pages (layout, quality and size of handwriting, line margins + and orientation of lines, underlines, corrections, etc.). A four-button menu + offers further options, such as highlighting entities (either all or none) and + dates as well as page-specific metadata. As no tooltips indicate those buttons’ + functions, this menu is not particularly user-friendly. Arrow buttons on the + top of each page allow users to browse through the leaves of the notebook.
++ The edited text (“Edierter Text”) is intended as a “linear reading + text”, consisting of the diplomatically transcribed notes of Theodor Fontane + (see fig. 5). Minor editorial interventions in the texts have been made in exceptional + cases such as word repetitions and misprints. The line breaks and page + breaks that form part of the diplomatic transcripts of the notebooks have been + removed in the “edited text”, and line orientation and margins have been + regularized. The fact that the eliminated breaks have not been replaced by + spaces, and that hyphens used to indicate word separation have been retained, + reduces the texts’ readability. Also, the use of different fonts, font sizes, + spacing, and underlines tends to interrupt the flow of reading. That is + aggravated when the display of symbols indicating entities in the text is + activated (even if not activated, the passages in question link to the + corresponding index entry). By default, speech bubble icons designate editorial + comments, which will be provided in pop-up windows.
+The extensive “(Meta-)Edition” section of the Fontane notebooks + edition must be considered an outstanding scholarly achievement that bears + witness to the meticulous research underlying the entire project. An introduction provides a helpful definition of the notebook genre + itself and its status within Fontane’s literary production, and details the + scope, provenance, contents, material conditions, publication history, and + reception of the writer’s notebooks.
+The editorial documentation (beta) offers a painstakingly detailed and + comprehensive overview of editorial principles, guidelines, and decisions. + Beyond making transparent the editor’s work in detail, it stakes a claim to + being a reference work for future digital editions of Fontane’s letters and + works, and even for editions of other writers’ notebooks. The individual + documentation items, addressing issues such as hands, fragments of torn pages, + or grease spots, providing facsimiles and the corresponding TEI/XML code + snippets, can be compared, with regard to their comprehensiveness and attention + to detail, to the documentation provided for edition humboldt digital. However, as the documentation (in fact, the + entire edition) is available only in German, its international reach will + remain limited. (In the case of the Humboldt edition, extensive contextual + information is provided in English even though the documentation of editorial + principles is in German only, too.)
+Furthermore, the “(Meta-)Edition” includes a comprehensive table of contents (across all notebooks), separate lengthy tables of + (editorial) abbreviations, special characters, and editorial marks, as well as a comprehensive bibliography. There are indices of events, institutions, persons, places, works, and + periodicals. Instead of being taken to lists of entries, however, the user + finds an interface to search the indices (not to be mistaken with the full-text + search function). The entries yield information related to norm data (linked to + DNB and Wikipedia), selected key dates, and links to relevant passages in the + notebook documents, and are available in XML output format. However, they offer + little context regarding their relation and relevance to Fontane and his + work.
+The
All parts of the edition are freely accessible without restrictions + or paywall. At the same time, the edition does not even offer a basic + English-language summary, which ultimately results in a reduced accessibility for + international users who are interested in general information on the project. + However, groups among German-language users might also find it difficult to + approach and engage with the presented materials due to limited navigation. While + the documents can be accessed through the nested system of box and notebook + categories, the table of contents, or the search function, there are no + alternative entry points to the documents (e. g. straight from the start page). + Providing access on different levels of complexity and prerequisite knowledge + could make it easier to attract target groups outside the scholarly community + whose members usually have a clear idea of what they are looking for.
+The exist-db application offers a basic RESTful API to access the + data via an HTTP client. For each of the notebooks, a link to the API is offered, + which allows users to download the individual TEI document. As no aggregate + download is provided, only users with programming knowledge are able to download + the entire collection at once.
+The digital edition of the
The data creation and modeling are rendered highly transparent + through the edition’s detailed editorial documentation. The data output of the + project provided in XML format can be accessed via the web application. A download + of individual resources is offered with the web application’s RESTful API; an + aggregate download is not available. The editors’ notes on data publication via the TextGrid repository so far + only holds true for facsimiles and other images.
+Several license issues have to be considered when using this + collection. Facsimiles and images are in the public domain and are freely + available under a CC0 license. The source code of the web application is hosted on a GitLab instance using a GNU LGPL 3.0 license. The same + license is used for the TEI schema ODD. The LGPL 3.0 license stipulates that there + are no limitations on how to use the source code besides disclosing the creators + and all changes made to the code; it is also necessary to publish any derivatives + of the code with the same license while the creators do not offer warranty or + liability.
+Most importantly, the online edition, i. e. all TEI/XML documents + including indices but excluding the schema ODD, is published under a CC BY-NC-ND + 4.0 license. This license limits the reusability of the data: not only must the + material not be used for commercial purposes, but also derivatives are not allowed + – in short, this is a read-only license. This means, for instance, that the data + cannot be connected with other collections and republished in a new data set; but + also that the edition data may not be further developed, e.g. in the context of + another project.
+The
This review has specifically paid attention to the FAIR criteria. The + online edition meets the key requirements of being findable, accessible, and + interoperable – with limitations regarding aspects such as the edition’s language + barrier and missing provisions for an aggregate download of data. The reusability of + the data is restricted by its CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 license, however. While the edition can + be cited as a bibliographic resource, the no-derivative component therefore limits + the usage of the data.
+One important issue that has arisen during the review process is related + to the edition’s unclear current status and future development. The edition pages as + well as the documentation on the website are at beta stage. Furthermore, especially + the uneven distribution of annotations across different notebooks (see above) would + seem to indicate that the editorial work is still in progress, and, in any case, + incomplete. According to the editorial team, work on the transcripts, comments, and + indices will be continued even after large-scale third-party funding ran out in 2019. + An information section on the start page informs the user that the final notebooks + were released on the edition website in December 2019. The news section + (“Neuigkeiten”) appears dated: the last entries in this section refer to public + events that took place in 2019; the most recent scholarly article dates back even + further, to the year 2017.
+In particular, it remains unclear whether the original plan for a hybrid + edition, including a print as well as an e-book edition of the notebooks, has been + discarded: in the XML documents, the TEI header announces a “Historisch-kritische und + kommentierte Edition” (“historical-critical and commented edition”) to be “in + Vorbereitung” (“in preparation”) and forthcoming with de Gruyter publishers. Part VI of the documentation (dated 6 October 2016) specifically outlines + the principles underlying a three-volume book edition. No further details are + provided as to the prospective publication date(s) of this hybrid edition. It is + equally uncertain which specific benefits a print edition would add to the project + apart from a more readable version of the notebook texts; then again, it would be + difficult to see why such a reading version should not form part of the digital + edition. Plans for a hybrid edition are mentioned also in the third paragraph of the + (undated) project description which is accessible through a direct link on + the start page. A more recent version of that description, dated 15 July 2022, which can be + reached through the “Projekt” tab of the navigation menu, no longer refers to the + project as a hybrid edition.
+We would like to end this review with a few suggestions for improvement.
+ It would seem desirable to have easily readable versions of the notebook texts with
+ visually regularized presentations of Fontane’s notes (with regard to horizontal and
+ vertical margins, fonts, and font sizes). Furthermore, a more liberal CC license
+ (such as CC BY 4.0 or CC BY-SA 4.0) would strongly increase the edition’s
+ reusability, enabling further publishing of the data in different formats depending
+ on different research interests. Lastly, the

+This review deals with the digital edition “Die Urkunden und Akten des Klosters und

+ (1308–1662)), which was carried out by the Department of History of the University of
+ Zurich between 2017 and 2020. The edition project provides access to more than 1500
+ charters and records. The aim of this review is to discuss the project context, the
+ web interface, the data and the quality of the edition. A particular focus will be
+ given to the FAIR data principles. Overall,
The digital edition of the charters and records of the Königsfelden + Monastery and the Oberamt Königsfelden from the years 1308–1662 (https://www.koenigsfelden.uzh.ch) + is the achievement of the Historical Seminar of the + University of Zurich and offers insights into a wide range of topics: from social + issues of the urban elites and the service nobility to aristocratic history and + aspects of economic and women's history. It should be noted at the outset that the + edition discussed here deals with a fully annotated corpus of historical sources. The + edition created from this material not only provides access to these historical + sources and their metadata via collections, but also a full-text search option, + indices, a map for locating documents, and experimental visualizations. Moreover, + users can access digital facsimiles of the source material, transcriptions, annotated + text, including diplomatic annotations such as abbreviations, and annotations of + named entities like persons, families, organizations, places, and their historical + context. For the annotation of the text, the project used XML and followed the + Guidelines of the Text Encoding Initiative P5 (TEI). At the time of the review, the database contained 1557 documents.
+This review focuses on the following subjects: The first section provides + an overview of the topic, objectives, methods, content, and modelling of the edition. + The second section addresses the publication and presentation, including technical + aspects, as well as the user interface of the collection, the search options, and the + edition views. After a particular focus on the FAIR data principles, the review + concludes with a brief discussion of the experimental visualization that the digital + edition additionally provides.

According to the project description, the reviewed project comprises a
+ so-called “Bestandesedition”
To enable a quick introduction to the material, the project + description outlines those parts of the collection that are relevant to specific + research areas. The following research areas are mentioned explicitly: Research on + monastic communities, on the history of religious orders, on late medieval economy + (e. g. on court and tithe administration), on local housekeeping, on written and + oral administrative practices, on institutionalizations and systematization of + rights, on gender history, on questions of Reformation history, on church and city + history, on architectural history, as well as archaeology and art history, and on + the Swiss “nobility” (e. g. on the Habsburg service nobility or on the “bourgeois” + elites of the cities).
+All in all, the edition is well documented. The detailed project
+ description includes the project context, the scope of the material, and editorial

As far as categories of information are concerned, the edition + focuses on “Regesten” (short summaries), named entities, the description of the + material as well as editorial annotation for a better understanding of the + content, such as additions, loss, or deletion of text. In addition to these non-TEI compliant implementations, the following
+ decision concerning the text model are worth discussing as well: Annotating the
+ “Dorsualnotizen” is essential for the project. It seems to me, however, that the
+ usage of the attribute @rend
does not fit. It is used like:
+ <p facs="#facs_2_region_1533022656524_73"
+ rend="dorsual_22_sigle">
. The TEI guidelines define
+ @rend
as follows: “@rend
should be used to express the representation of the text,
+ like italic, bold, or dotted. ‘Knowing’ that the text on the back of a document is
+ a “Dorsualnotiz” according to a certain categorization, as it is used for the
+ search functionality, is not covered within the scope of @rend
.
+ Therefore, the attribute @ana
would be a better fit.
Documents within Monasterium.org may represent an alternative or + comparable use of XML/TEI for annotating these types of documents (cf. Roland 2020). The given example does + not contain an annotated text, but rich metadata about the document, which are + especially important to implement a front end with different search functions. +

Searching and browsing are essential functionalities of a platform on + which sources are to be found for research purposes. And they also play an + important role in the edition. Therefore, the Königsfelden online edition offers + four points of access: Collections, Search, Index and Map.

The web front end is implemented using Bootstrap 3 and jQuery. + Responsiveness of the webpage is given. Functionalities like the facsimile viewer + are hidden in the mobile view, which represents a pragmatic solution.
+A major drawback of the website are the loading times. The loading of + certain pages and search queries takes quite a long time. For example, when + clicking on the “Documents” button in the navigation to view all documents, it + takes about 15 seconds for the page to load. Even if you click on the pagination, + you will encounter slow processing, because it loads all the 60 documents until + the next action can be performed. The same loading issue arises with search + queries, although an online edition, being a special type of web resource, should + allow users multiple query functions to search for specific documents or explore + the collection. The loading time might severely lower the users’ motivation and + might edge the threshold of the users’ patience.

Accessibility is a distinct field of web development that also deals
+ with barrier-free access to web content. In order to optimize the accessibility of
+ a website, the web content needs to provide valid data, for example in terms of
+ HTML5 validity, which in turn has an impact on whether your web content will be
+ discovered by search engines. The accessibility of web pages can be tested
+ manually or by using tools, such as the WAVE Web Accessibility Evaluation
+ Tool
When validating the web page of the Königsfelden edition with WAVE,
+ minor errors in the HTML code become visible. It shows that the @alt
+ and @label
attributes are missing, and that there is more than one
+ <main>
section. Especially @alt
and
+ @label
are important attributes if a page is to be read by a
+ screen reader. These are minor errors that do not impede the functionality but
+ still limit accessibility and do not represent good practice. Usually, the funding
+ agency and/or the institution hosting the website has/have their own
+ specifications that have to be considered. For more details on the accessibility
+ of web pages, I can highly recommend the blog post by Stanley (2018).
When exploring the edition, another restriction must be taken into + consideration: The entire digital edition is only available in German. Since the + majority of the sources is in German, the user interface is also adapted to German + speakers, which is legitimate by all means. Nevertheless, an abstract in English + could possibly open up access to other groups as well.
+The FAIR
By findable we mean whether a data set can be easily found by both + humans and machines. It includes four sub-goals. The first refers to assigning + globally unique and persistent identifiers to the data. Each document has a + citation suggestion that looks like this: “Digitale Edition Königsfelden, URL: + <www.koenigsfelden.uzh.ch/exist/apps/ssrq/docs/U-17_0001.xml>, Stand: + 7.8.2022.” It contains a URL that uniquely identifies each document. However, it + cannot be concluded whether the URL is a persistent identifier. Instead, it shows + that eXist-db is addressed directly. On Zenodo, there is a DOI that refers to the + entire data dump: 10.5281/zenodo.5179361.
+Secondly, sufficient metadata, that allows contextualizing the
+ documents, can be found on the Zenodo webpage and also on the edition webpage. For
+ each individual TEI document, this is only partially the case. In the TEIs one can
+ only find metadata about the actors involved, the title of the edition, the
+ publication date, descriptive metadata of the document contained by
+ <msDesc>
, and the transcription and annotation guidelines.
+ Other necessary metadata about the individual object, rights or publication can
+ only be found on the Zenodo webpage. The criteria are thus satisfied to a limited
+ extent. Furthermore, there is no identifier or URL that establishes a link between
+ the individual document and the edition. This is only possible via the signature,
+ such as “StAAG U.17/0887b”. The shelfmark is used as ID, as indicated in the URL
+ of the web representation of the document
If an edition is freely accessible for any user without access + restrictions (including authentication and authorization), then it is accessible + in the sense of the FAIR criteria. The website can be accessed via HTTP without + further authentication or authorization. The access to metadata, even when the + website is no longer available, however, is only partially guaranteed. As + mentioned before, some portions of metadata can be found on Zenodo, some on the + edition webpage and a big part, but not all metadata in the TEI documents of this + edition. Now, since the TEIs do not include all the existing metadata, changes on + the edition webpage or Zenodo would affect the accessibility of a large part of + the metadata.
+Generally, data is used together with other data in applications or
+ workflows for analysis, storage, and processing. Therefore, it is necessary that
+ data, with as little effort as possible, can be merged, integrated, or combined.
+ Consequently, data should use a formal, accessible, shared, and broadly applicable
+ language for knowledge representation. The TEI is the (de facto) standard that is
+ used for the realization of editions of historical sources. It should be noted,
+ however, that adaptations are necessarily domain specific. This means that
+ historical documents, such as charters, require their own modelling. Next to the
+ XML/TEI files all other primary data of the project can be found and cited on
+ Zenodo (Halter-Pernet, Colette et.
+ al 2021). This data dump consists of PageXML (~30.0 MB), which is the
+ output of Transkribus
The goal of the fourth FAIR data principle is to maximize the reuse
+ of data. For this purpose, data should be well described in order to be used in
+ various contexts. The platform is licensed with CC BY-NC-SA and the edition data
+ with CC BY 4.0. Data and metadata are therefore released with an explicit and
+ accessible data usage license. However, this information should also be included
+ in the <teiHeader>
of the TEI documents. Data are associated
+ with detailed information on provenance like project title, persons involved, and
+ editing guidelines. These details can be found in the XML/TEI, and some further
+ information on provenance are available in the project description on the edition
+ and on the Zenodo page. Thus, with the selection of the XML/TEI format, the data
+ meets a domain-relevant community standard.
Even though it is not explicitly defined in the FAIR criteria, data + exports and API are crucial for digital editions. No technical interfaces, + spin-offs or export formats could be identified, neither does it seem to be + possible to directly address the XML/TEI of a source document in the web front + end. Nevertheless, the FAIR data principles are met.
+The “Überlieferung” button leads the user to an experimental overview, + where the collection is presented by means of information visualization. This view + incorporates four sections: 1) the visualization of the creation of documents, their + copies and their “Dorsualnotizen”, 2) the frequency and occurrence of + “Dorsualnotizschichten”, 3) the network visualization of the “Dorsualschichten”, and + 4) a section on archival orders. It is a very good idea to provide such a view, as it + allows exploratory access to the dataset, in addition to the already existing ones. + The first three sections will be briefly discussed in the following. Before doing so, + though, I want to emphasize that I am well aware that it is a complex challenge to + create interactive visualizations from a dataset of historical information. + Especially, if you do not only wish to produce beautiful images, but to also create + added value in terms of gaining knowledge via the visualization, and in particular, + if you are providing it as an interactive web application.
++ This visualization illustrates the production of documents as well as the + copying activity (see fig. 10). The + Y-axis represents the time (1300–1789) and the X-axis represents the individual + pages of the cartularies. Each blue dot symbolizes a single document located at + the correct height of the Y-axis depending on the date of origin. The X-axis shows + the date of origin within the year (January–December). The horizontally arranged + dots in different shades of yellow indicate copies of documents in the three + processed cartularies. Each document is also connected to its copies by lines. + Based on the position of the yellow dot above the X-axis, it is possible to find + out on which folio page in the corresponding cartulary users can find the copy. + Clicking on the dot opens the corresponding document in a new window.
+The idea behind the visualization is very interesting. It provides an
+ overview of the temporal relationship between the cartularies and documents.
+ However, there seem to be some issues as far as the implementation is concerned.
+ The orange highlighting creates a messy ball of information, and it is quite
+ difficult to select another related element. Clicking on one of the buttons under
+ “Dorsualnotizen” on the right, such as “dors_2”, does not lead to any result. In
+ my opinion, it would be advisable to implement the
+ The diagram shows the respective temporal scope of the individual + “Dorsualnotizschichten” and thus enables a visual comparison of the target + documents (see fig. 11). The + designations of the “Dorsualschichten” are linked to the documents of the edition. + This is a successful visualization, in my opinion. At a glance, you can see the + number of “Dorsualschichten” and in which period they occur. The additional + heat-map-like layer shows the occurrence of the phenomena per year in colour. The + existing legend provides an easy way to understand the visualization and colour + coding. A click on the labels of the “Dorsualschichten” should give a search + result of all corresponding documents, but, unfortunately, it only leads to an + error message. It would be a great additional feature to get another layer of + information showing time-related details about the documents, and thus providing + an immediately visible temporal classification of the documents without a search + query. This could be solved, for example, with a hover function over each bar + representing a single year. Alternatively, common filter functions could help to + bring more interactivity into the visualization.
++ The network visualization of the Königsfelden edition (see fig. 12) shows the connection between a + document and one or more “Dorsualschichten”. Each of them is represented by a + different colour and can be switched on or off. By clicking on a document node, + only the associated “Dorsualschichten” are displayed. Clicking on the name of a + document node, opens the corresponding document.
+The idea is attractive, but again, there are some implementation + issues. If you click on a label like “number”, it results in displaying a blank + page. The colour key for the individual nodes is quite small and therefore + difficult to identify. Also, the readability of the tooltips containing some + relevant information is definitely improvable. In addition, the colours are too + similar. For example, the shades of pink are not distinguishable when working with + the visualization. The information space is limited to a certain selection size, + which makes the visualization very confusing. However, with only a small selection + of documents, it is possible to get useful visualizations.
+The digital edition of
All in all, this is a successful implementation of a digital edition, + even if minor flaws remain. However, these shortcomings do not really limit the use + of the resource as they relate to invalid HTML5 and TEI, accessibility, user + interface issues, as well as not entirely perfect but very interesting + visualizations. Nor do these minor insufficiencies diminish the achievement of + compiling and providing (almost) FAIR-compliant research data. The only real issue I + notice is the loading time of certain web pages and search queries. From my + experience, I dare to say that with maybe 2-3 months more project time, these minor + issues and maybe also the loading time troubles could have been fixed.

+This review examines the Digital Edition of the Diaries of Prince Christian II. von + Anhalt-Bernburg, implemented by the University of Freiburg and the Herzog August + Bibliothek. The research project, which has been running since 2013 and has not yet + been completed, aims to present the entire diary (diplomatic transcription and + facsimiles) of the prince which comprises a total of approximately 17,400 pages. In + its digital approach, the project offers a sound-text-presentation that far surpasses + that of the print medium (e.g., enrichment with norm data, visualizations, provision + of Linked Open Data), but the lack of technical documentation makes it difficult to + trace the workflow, archiving, or even subsequent use of the data.
+ wieder Hinweise finden, dass momentan Änderungen an Text und Apparaten möglich sind;

RELAX NG).
A quantitative analysis of the ODD provides valuable insights into
+ the data model.<add>
, <line>

+ <seg>
, <surface>
, and
+ <zone>
are the top five elements.

+ the top five elements refer to the material character of the encoded sources,
+ the editorial notes are relatively sparse.
The TEI/XML files contain diplomatic transcriptions of all texts
+ with a detailed markup of material features which strive for a representation
+ that approximates the original materials. Each page
+ (<surface>
) is divided into segments of geometrically
+ defined dimensions (e. g. <zone ulx="2.9" uly="11.1" lrx="8.9"
+ lry="11.3">
) that determine the exact positions of text parts. The
+ line margins are precisely measured (e. g. <line
+ style="margin-left:2.4cm">
ſtändlichkeiten
+ und</line>
), and the approximate orientation of lines is
+ recorded (e. g. <zone […] rotate="330" […]>
). Furthermore,
+ different hands, scripts, as well as sizes and qualities of handwriting (e. g.
+ <handShift script="hasty"/>
) are documented in meticulous
+ detail. The markup also exactly renders the idiosyncratic shapes of underlines
+ (e. g. <hi>St<seg id="B01_2v_m" next="#B01_2v_n"
+ style="text-decoration:underline"
+ rend="underline-style:half-s-shaped(upper-left)">ände</seg></hi>
),
+ overwritings, deletions, additions, and special characters. Finally, material
+ features of the writing and the material carrier, such as writing implements,
+ inserted paper pockets, pasted clippings, or traces of torn or cut pages, are
+ encoded (e. g. <surface […] type="pocket"
+ subtype="angeklebte_cremefarbige_Tasche_von_Fontane_angefertigt_-_Angeklebtes_Blatt"

). High-resolution facsimiles

+ inserted attachments.
The <teiHeader>
lists the metadata, providing

+ shows, only about 14% of these nodes are linked to authority files (such as
+ GND, Wikidata, and OpenStreetMap), improving the quality of the markup of these
+ entities. Furthermore, 2,129 annotated dates (<date>
)

+ des Oberamts Königsfelden 1308–1662“ (Charters and Records of Königsfelden
+Under the direction of Prof. Simon Teuscher, University of Zurich, and in

+ guidelines. A detailed documentation of the technical implementation and the
+ workflows for the collecting of the data is, however, missing. On the Zenodo

As elaborated in the following, these defined objectives are clearly

As far as categories of information are concerned, the edition + focuses on “Regesten” (short summaries), named entities, the description of the + material as well as editorial annotation for a better understanding of the + content, such as additions, loss, or deletion of text. This edition is thus + document-focused. The aim of the edition is to make the documents findable and to + serve as a working basis for further – but not exclusively historical – + research.

+ Whereas the TEI documents (see fig. + 4) are well-formed to allow further processing and to ensure their + reusability, a more detailed exploration of the edition revealed that the + documents are not valid according to the TEI. Unfortunately, the project does not + provide any indications in the metadata of the XML/TEI files, nor a TEI + customization, ODD or schema that could be referenced to the TEI documents of the + edition to ensure their consistency.

+Since the technical implementation is poorly documented, it is not
+ clear whether the mention of
Searching and browsing are essential functionalities of a platform on + which sources are to be found for research purposes.

+
+ The
Accessibility is a distinct field of web development that also deals

+ wieder Hinweise finden, dass momentan Änderungen an Text und Apparaten möglich sind;

+ grundsätzlich die Nachnutzbarkeit und Weiterverwendbarkeit der Daten ermöglicht;
