The Connolly Basin Impact Structure

Under Construction

The Connolly Basin impact structure is located in the Gibson Desert of north central region of Western Australia. It is located at 124 deg 45 min east and 23 deg 33 min south on the Morris SF51-16 1:250 000 map sheet and the Traeger 3850 1:100 000 map sheet. The Connolly Basin is a 9 km circular depression and was first identified by Gene and Caroline Shoemaker (1985, 1986). The information summarised below has been derived from Haines (2005).

The Connolly Basin has 25 - 30 m high rim and a central uplift of about 1 km in diameter. The gravity data (Shoemaker and Shoemaker (1989) indicates a complex impact crater with a central uplift surrounded by a low-density breccia and overlying higher density crater fill sandstone.
